[MaximumPC]AMD: R9 290X Will Be "Much Faster Than Titan in Battlefield 4" - Page 10

Judging by the comments from AMD thusfar, it seems as though the R290X won't quite beat Titan. I suspect we'll be seeing them trade blows, though, just like the 7970 and 680 do. Otherwise known as a win for nVidia, in the public eye.

Mantle has me excited, though. It sounds like GCN v1.0 will benefit all the same, and that's just unbelievably awesome for us 7 series owners. I can't even count the number of times my 7970's have repaid me since I first bought them. At this point, they've already improved in performance and features as much as a typical refresh; with Mantle coming up, I don't even know.

Hopefully Mantle is targeting the next gen consoles as well. Considering they're already x86 and AMD driven, Mantle-ready ports seems like a real possibility. If the performance increases with Mantle are this grande, and all the future ports ship with them.. can you imagine?

Didn't it only score 8000 in firestrike?

Oh weird...........

I remember trying Firestrike back when it was quite new...

480 scored half of this...

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/1282666

I am wrong about the lowest end card being as fast as Fermi, sorry about that.

So apparently there is a 290x and a 290 (pro as some may say) why didn't they showcase the 290 on the firestrike chart?

Yeah AMD basically said nothing about how it compares to the 780 or the Titan. They didn't even give a real Firestrike number on anything but their rebranded chips and used alot of language that sounds like they're trying to hide the fact that it isn't faster than even the 780.

"Fastest GPU we've ever built" - well I would hope so...

"Winning at every major price point"

Firestrike doesn't matter much but that's the ONE metric they gave and it wasn't impressive. They spent the majority of the time talking about Audio, which most people don't care about, and the rest was developers showing off their games with token mentions of AMD until DICE dropped the Mantle bomb.

Mantle could be epic, but everything in the presentation points to it being used to mask short comings in any currently released game. Why keep it a secret that the other games were using it if they were? Why hide behind "9x framecalls" instead of percentage increases in fps?

In 6 months Mantle might be a great reason to go AMD, but it's sort of embarassing how much real info they showed about this supposedly spectacular card. It's all resting on Mantle. Without it, sentiment on OCN would be overwhelmingly negative towards these new cards because that's how the sentiment of the reveal thread was until the last 5 minutes when Mantle was mentioned.

Mantle is good short term for AMD and for GCN card owners but long term I fear it will just split the resources of developers, cause situations where we would need to buy both AMD and NV cards for best performance, etc. Kind of like Glide from 3dfx, pretty much no one was sad to see that thing go even though it might have offered better performance for 3dfx cards.

PC gaming really does not need a situation where developers are choosing sides and giving excellent performance for one team and much worse performance for the other.

This is however assuming that mantle will ever get even close to being widely adopted. It's targeting an extreme minority of the market and you're basically asking devs to split their resources between mantle and directX development.

So the 290X is supposed to beat the Titan in one game?

But only when that one game is made to specifically work best with AMD cards/hardware?

And only when it is using a seemingly proprietary technology that is only available in this one game for now and only a couple of months after the game's release?

Yup, sure does sound like a win.

If they continue the pricing scheme I'm guessing the 290 is $400 and the $290x is $500.Yet, I'm concerned since the didn't show the price of either. Anything above $500 would be a fail unless it really does beat up on the 780.

What scares me is even though they won't say how fast it is, is why they won't show the price. If it wasn't as fast as the 780 I could see them with a 499$ card but they won't even say, could be looking at a 499$ 290 and a 599$ 290x. But then that theory has a 200$ gap.
