need suggestion for my home "cloud storage"

Thread Starter
I am wanting to put cloud storage on my network for multiple reasons. Mainly for all my digital comics. Maybe torrent box / hd tv shows/movies in the future. These are couple ideas I was throwing around.

NAS (simple)
Raspberry pi with raspbian
Openwrt router with 1tb usb external HDD
My pc with file sharing (only pc I have and my room will get too hot.)

I would like to have my tablet / laptop / streaming box (ps3 roku etc.... in the near future.)

Please let me know on your opinion is best cost effecient

Getting real tired of these posts in Servers.

"I need a server to watch movies, please let me know"

Seriously, check the other 9 billion threads in here that ask the same question.

I have to agree with this. A simple Google yields millions of results with in depth reviews + Q&A's. thumb.gif

There are storage products such as freenas and openfiler. There are routing/firewall products such as OpenWRT, UnTange, pfSense which have add ons serving file sharing purposes etc...

Or there are a million prebuilt off the shelf NAS boxes that have torrent clients built in and DNLA streaming functionality.

Question is about expandability really. Is this going to be a configure and forget box? Or will you want it to perform more and more functions over time, in which case building yourself a small, low powered home server is probably more adequate.

Dont rage in a thread were I have done my own research and narrow done the solutions that I think would work for my situation. I didnt say oh i need cloud server solution and i made no effort of googling.

Regardless I'm gonna give the raspberry pi a shot.

do you already have the pi ? if not you will need to have a usb powered hub for your external hard drive. Buy a few sd card to play with a couple of different setup : server, media htpc, ... I have one at home, it is fun to play with it.

here is a link for more info raspberry-pi-perfect-home-server
