Stay with Cable or switch to V DSL?

Like to start off with saying that I've been happy with my Cable provider for the past 10 years. I've had Cox Communications and they've been good to me, I currently have a really good deal on their Preferred Service which gives me 25 Down / 5 Up. However, I've been told that they do a lot of traffic shaping, and I never really cared because I don't torrent. However, I've always been a heavy gamer and lately I've been playing FFXIV.

With FFXIV I've been experiencing major lag spikes lately, to the point where doing any raiding is impossible, even though I never disconnect and have no lag problems in any other online game I play. At the same time connecting to sites like youtube sometimes takes me minutes to buffer a video, it once took me 30 minutes to watch a 2 minute trailer, while I'm able to watch 1080p streams on twitch without any slowdown. I've called them several times over the issue, tried 3 different modems, direct connections bypassing the router, and even changing my firewall. None of that helped. They've sent 3 technicians who each did something different such as changing all my cables and splitters, giving me a new modem, and in the end they say everything is fixed and leave. I even had the problem escalated and submitted 6 different logs of 10x Pings and 10x Traceroutes to different servers, including the one I connect to for FFXIV. Still they insist there's no issue on their end.

A lot of people on FFXIV's forums have been having similar problems, and a surprisingly large amount of them use Cox. I've come to the conclusion that since FFXIV uses P2P data transfers, that Cox's traffic shaping is coming into effect causing me to lag.

Now since I'm unfortunate enough to live in an area where we don't have fiber options such as Google, the only other option I have is Century Link DSL. Luckily they've upgraded their lines in my neighborhood to VDSL and they tell me I can get 40 Down/5 Up for a little less than I was paying Cox, and while the tech gave me his usual spiel about how DSL isn't shared even though it is and how it's faster than cable bit for bit even though it probably isn't, would I notice a large decline in speed or would the higher download cap off set it?

Opinions and suggestions would be appreciated.

TLDR; 25/5 Cable connection is being throttled, only other choice is 40/5 VDSL. What should I do?

First of all you are not going to notice any speed difference between say 20Mbps cable and 20Mbps DSL. They both have identical bandwidth and both connect to the internet in a similar fashion. There may be a tiny difference (I said difference, not just increase) in latency but this is NOT due to the difference between Cable and DSL, it is due to how the ISP peers or transits data onto higher tier networks.

Cable vs DSL is literally just a different media to which the signals get to your house. Its still copper cables to the door, usually with Fibre at the street cabinet.

Your question then....

You will double your download speed if you can achieve 40 down on DSL and they don't throttle traffic. So your internet will be twice as fast,

So what's with all the hate DSL gets if they're identical in speed bit for bit?

VDSL and DSL are similar not the same. On DSL your connection tends to go the whole way to the office that your phone comes from and is only half duplex, meaning that in many cases you get at most 1Mbps and it is very high latency; this is true unless you happen to come out of a remote (small phone switch randomly located in an area the phone company could get power). VDSL is connected controller usually within 3 miles and in your case probably within 1/2 a mile and taken back to the office over fiber, it is still half duplex and speed is still affected by distance just the system covers a smaller area with higher speeds.

If you have cm then I would stick with is, the latency could get a bit hard to deal with when gaming, and you most likely get a discount on your bill if you have cable and internet with the same company.

I just happen to have made a theoretical speed map recently for my companies VDSL system. The higher line is given a perfect 100% copper twisted pair with little interference (lab tests), and the bottom is the real word tests we got using 85 year old mostly aluminum lines. So far for the 10 people on it that all fall between those 2 lines.

The cost isn't really an issue. My main problem is the Cox Communication is making it impossible for me to play my favorite game right now. DSL is my only other option, unless someone knows of a way to get around an ISP's traffic shaping.

I would think that their business grade stuff wouldn't have the traffic shaping, but I would have no idea since the company I work for has no use for it.

Try using this link, I would take a look at the smaller companies you haven't heard of, they tend to be the ones that got stimulus money for building fiber or they went to fiber so that they could have a CLEC. The added bonus of the small companies is that they tend to put less money into bandwidth management because with 4,000 customers they can pull as little as 200Mbps at peak, and probably have a 500Mbps or better teir 1 link, so no reason to do any shaping.

Thanks for the website. I checked and unfortunately for my address the only other company besides Cox and Century Link is Integra which is 6 Down / 1 Up ADSL.

Well as I see it you have 3 options. 1) Try the business level stuff and see if that gives you what you need. 2) Try the VDSL solution. 3) Move somewhere that has fiber.

The odd thing about fiber is that for the most part companies don't offer significantly higher speeds than coax or copper pair plants. Fiber plants do tend to have a completely different idea on what the internet should look like, which ends up being a lot better.

Since the VDSL is faster there's little reason to not change.

Latency is different. If you can get provided with VDSL with FI (fast interleave), the latency is generally better than cable, but if not, well it's generally worse. We're not talking about much here - I get about 18 ms to the first hop (my ISP's router) without fast interleave on my connection. I think it's supposed to do 3-4 ms with FI, while cable is in that region too - although cable is shared between everyone else on the same line, so during peak times you can get horrible latency and bandwidth.
