Yes, but the biggest source of funding they can find will come from DARPA, and they WILL insist on hard light weapons research.

Don't care for weapon like capability, I just want a toy light that will appear and disappear - none of that phony tube stuff that lights up, I want it to retract and open up like in the movies!
