Airflow issues on Storm Scout 2 Advanced(pics)

Thread Starter
Copying this from my post in the official scout club in hopes of getting some replies.

Just finished transferring my system components over from my old Scout to my new midnight black Scout 2 advanced and I ran in to some issues that I could use some help with.

-Case only came with one removable dust filter for the bottom but the guru3d review of the Scout 2 Advanced(ghost white) shows two removable filters. Am I missing one or do I need to order it?

-The side panel has those horizontally stacked fan mounts unlike the Scout 1 that had them vertically stacked. I also can't have my upper front panel fan custom-mounted under the optical drive since this thing now has two fan mount on the lower half of the front panel. This means my H50 rad which is mounted as rear exhaust is no longer getting heaps of fresh air which has so far increased my cpu/core temps about 2c. Any way to remedy this? I do have an exhaust fan in the forward-top fan mount, would it hurt to have an intake fan in the rear-top fan mount feeding fresh air directly to my rad?

-I have always mounted my H50 radiator with the hoses on the bottom in my original Scout. In the Scout 2 this is impossible because it conflicts with part of the case so I had the flip the rad upside-down(apparently the hose end is larger than the other end by a hair). Not a big deal but this worries me a little because this H50 is about 3 years old and I'm sure the liquid level has dropped a bit. Is this rad designed in such a way that if the water level drops enough it can starve those lines with the rad mounted upside-down?

I have no fans mounted to the side panel because I don't like them being horizontally stacked. In my opinion this is a waste of air, but it does feed the video card...although once I get that second dust filter I can just use a bottom-mount fan which would throw air right at my video card's fan. So I won't be putting fans on that side panel which is a bit of a let down. Maybe some day I can cut up that panel and install a window with two vertically stacked 120mm holes like I did on my Scout 1. Then I could even re-use my 2piece FilterRight filters. wink.gif

ETA: I made a little mspaint diagram of how I think I might set up my fans in order to get fresh air to the GPU and radiator without having to install side panel fans. Would this be an acceptable setup? This will be far more intake than exhaust, but positive pressure is a good thing. I also need to figure out how to filter that top and bottom intake. The latter I can probably order from CM but the top will need to be something custom yet easy to clean. Definitely not enough space for my FilterRight filters to fit there.

ETA2: Wouldn't be right of me to post and not toss in a few shots of my rig.

Many people are going to tell you mixed solutions.

You can either: 1.) Change the flow of the fan up top to make it into an intake, as well. You must make sure to use filters to reduce dust build up. In this configuration, you will have high positive pressure inside the case.

2.) Have equal amount of airflow as intake and exhaust. That means making all of your top fans into exhaust fans, as well as your radiator fan.

I will probably set my fans up like I have them in that mspaint diagram which means I'll only have two exhaust fans; forward-top and rear. I'll also have the two open fan mounts on the side panel which will act sort of like exhaust vents. Would there be any downside to this? The only possible issue I could find, apart from needing a filter for the rear-top intake, is that rear-top intake possibly sucking in a bit of warm air from the forward-top exhaust but I doubt it would be enough to mess with my temps.

If I can order those removable filters I may get two and trim one down a bit to fit inside that removable top panel between the mesh and honeycomb. This way one half of that panel will be filtered, and the other half won't.

Doing it like you have shown in MSpaint will create a "swirl pattern," possibly leaving a dead spot around your radiator.

I could do both top fans as intake but then my only exhaust would be the radiator. I wouldn't have much positive pressure because of the open side panel vents and all the little openings in the back panel of the case.

Would there be any downside to having 2x front intake, 2x top intake, 1x bottom intake, open side panel vents? The only exhaust I would have would be my rear-mounted push/rad/pull setup and any extra positive air pressure would be vented through the side panel. I'd also have to figure out how to filter those top intakes but that shouldn't be a huge problem.

That's the best setup I could come up with so far short of cutting the fan mount area from the side panel and installing a whole new window with vertically-stacked 120mm holes like I did on my Scout 1.

It's best just to play around with your fan configuration to see what fits your setup the best. If I were in your situation I'd have the front, top and rad as intake and have the top as exhaust. You'd be pulling cooler air from the outside of the case into the rad versus pushing the hotter air from the case through it. This might help a little.

I originally started with my rad as upper front panel intake on my Scout 1 but this resulted in higher temps for everything else inside the case.

If I run the rad as intake on this Scout 2 I'll probably have to throw it on the front upper fan spot which would require me to remove the upper hdd cage. The problem there is that the upper HDD cage is housing two of my HDDs and the lower cage has my SSD and a bundle of PSU wiring. I probably could stuff those cables behind the MB plate and move the HDDs down to the lower cage, but having the rad there would throw hot exhaust air directly at my video card. Having a bottom intake fan will probably count that. The biggest problem here is how much I have to rebend those water lines and honestly I'm a bit worried about that due to the age of this h50.

I can't run the rad as top intake because there isn't enough room for it since it is push > shroud > rad > pull. It's quite a bulky setup but that layout has worked best for me so far.

I'm thinking I can do 2x front intake, 2x top intake, 1x bottom intake, rad as rear exhaust, and no fans on the side panel which would leave those fan spots as 'exhaust vents.' This way my rad, ram, hdds/ssd, and video card are all receiving fresh air. The only customization required would be filtering that top panel. Would I be better off leaving those side panel vents open or should I figure out a way to close them up for increased air pressure in the case?

I'll also be upgrading to the CM seidon 120m soon. This h50 is over 3 years old now and I'm sure its ability to cool my CPU has dropped substantially.
