is there any reason to get a 7970 over a 280x? will there be anything noticeably different between the 2?

Also I hate this naming scheme. What in the world is the "2" for in all these names? And I get the 9 in the R9, but what's the 7 mean in R7? Is the next generation going to be R10?? Would have made more sense to simply be like RD 290, or even just R290, and the next generation would be R390, etc. There's no use for the R7 line, since the numbers only go up to 260. R260 would have worked just fine.
The R9/R7 is the performance bracket, the 2 (290, 280x) is the generation. So the next generation should include an R9 390x/R7 360 and so on.

OT: All you did was substantiate his viewpoint... No point in the R9/7 because the 290x ---> 390x delineates itself quite nicely. The only point would be if there was a R9 290x and an R7 290x, which would be terrible product labeling/marketing. So the RX moniker is pretty useless. And I concur 100% New naming is pretty bad. rolleyes.gif

Never heard anything good about XFX DD coolers, I would definitely need to wait for reliable reviews of this cooler. I also will not make the mistake of getting a non-ref PCB ever again, makes it a pain to go to a nice block.

I didnt see the HL2 deal.

So you honestly dont think this gonna be out in time for BF4? That would be the stupidest promotion ever if they bang on about the 290x being good for BF4 but dont release it when the game is out.

Then again the presentation yesterday was so farcical and idiotic, i wouldnt be suprised.

Yeah the old HL2 deal, if my old brain serves me correctly, the GPU was at least a generation old when the game finally came out smile.gif

ok did a little search and unearthed this article.
GPU's with HL2 bundle were around Sept 2003, game released back end of 2004

And the cooler looks nice but probably still performs terrible. I've lost all confidence in XFX coolers. I also have to LOL at ALREADY using a custom PCB for no apparent reason other than to cut corners. I don't want your cheapo low-quality-component PCBs, I want a proper reference PCB directly from AMD with a custom high performance cooler attached to it.
you lose faith because of 1 generation?....pre 7000 they always had good card, with great oc chips
