I am sure the new very sleek looking cards will perform just fine, I am however surprised at the amount of love they are getting for a 'rehash' as there was a fair amount of derision directed at Nvidia when they did a rehash .... twice rolleyes.gif

Cooling on XFX cards is sub par.

Warranty is nice though.

And the cooler looks nice but probably still performs terrible. I've lost all confidence in XFX coolers. I also have to LOL at ALREADY using a custom PCB for no apparent reason other than to cut corners. I don't want your cheapo low-quality-component PCBs, I want a proper reference PCB directly from AMD with a custom high performance cooler attached to it.

Do keep up. this has been confirmed in the presentation yesterday.

they are maybe doing a rehash but it's for there lower line cards,
they are still 2 new cards unlike nvidia with one

People, do you realize why HD7900 series cards from XFX sucked? They thought a vapor chamber exempts them from having heatpipes. A vapor chamber (phase change in a flat "box") is basically a flat heatpipe, best used to distribute heat to fins rather than as a replacement for heatpipes (phase change). Their VRM chips and memory don't even touch the fins, they have something similar to the MSI and Sapphire heatsinks' flat plate for that. Sapphire got it right core-wise with the Vapor-X. XFX failed miserably on Tahiti.

It's not like they have bad component quality: you see colitronics choke and DirectFETS on some of their PCBs like AMD reference design. However their black edition of the HD7970 actually has worse components compared to the reference, with a 4+1+1 phase Ferrite core,uPI PWM control, and some SINOPOWER mosfets.
see http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/49511_3/Obzor_i_testirovanie_videokart_Sapphire_HD_7970_Vapor-X_GHz_Edition_i_XFX_R7970_Black_Edition_1000M.html

HD7950 has a similar phenomenon if you look at http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/45741/Obzor_i_testirovanie_videokarty_XFX_R7950_Double_Dissipation_Edition.html

This is XFX's Tahiti cooler (from harwareheaven)

HardOCP has this image for their theory

If you look at an XFX DD cooler for Tahiti (not Pitcairn, which has 4 heatpipes albeit small ones)

This is a Pitcairn XFX cooler: (from techreport)

That said , there's no reason to buy XFX anymore since they dropped lifetime warranty, just like EVGA did. (http://www.techpowerup.com/159346/xfx-discontinues-double-lifetime-warranty-with-new-radeon-graphics-cards.html)

Though since it Might be technically possible, I suspect it's a stupid idea if it's real since PCI-E is already extremely slow compared to VRAM<->GPU intercommunication so if anything we need more of its bandwidth free, even if people have the illusion they get "100%" on 3.0 x 16 (its not "100%", it is the best available) and even if cards manufacturers sit comfy on a status quo that keeps the CPU and main RAM out of the loop as much as possible due to this deficiency though it is not good for the Platform since we spend about half of the money on the main system and those guys try to not use it at all because of this deficiency.

How much more confirmation do you want, it was on the damm AMD presentation I forced myself to watch yesterday?

Its because its the hate coming up lol. Some people on both sides will always find ways to discredit the competitor. Being an AMD guy first then leaving for Nvidia...I now see that Nvidia has their homework cut out for them. I myself will be making the switch back to AMD, they have proven something worth wild to make me WANT to come back. People will always say Nvidia has Titan and thats cool, but ill never want to spend my cash on it or on any card that cost that much money. I simply want the best bang for the buck.

The 7970 is still priced 280-300$ with mail-in-rebate and 300-320 w/o... I will wait a bit hoping to get either crazy rebate on 7970 or R8 to fall in price. If I can get the 7970/R8 at 250$ w/o MIR (or with a new game bundle), it's instant buy.
