A vapor chamber (phase change in a flat "box") is basically a flat heatpipe, best used to distribute heat to fins rather than as a replacement for heatpipes (phase change). Their VRM chips and memory don't even touch the fins, they have something similar to the MSI and Sapphire heatsinks' flat plate for that. Sapphire got it right core-wise with the Vapor-X. XFX failed miserably on Tahiti.

It's not like they have bad component quality: you see colitronics choke and DirectFETS on some of their PCBs like AMD reference design. However their black edition of the HD7970 actually has worse components compared to the reference, with a 4+1+1 phase Ferrite core,uPI PWM control, and some SINOPOWER mosfets.
see http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/49511_3/Obzor_i_testirovanie_videokart_Sapphire_HD_7970_Vapor-X_GHz_Edition_i_XFX_R7970_Black_Edition_1000M.html

HD7950 has a similar phenomenon if you look at http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/45741/Obzor_i_testirovanie_videokarty_XFX_R7950_Double_Dissipation_Edition.html

This is XFX's Tahiti cooler (from harwareheaven)

HardOCP has this image for their theory

If you look at an XFX DD cooler for Tahiti (not Pitcairn, which has 4 heatpipes albeit small ones)

This is a Pitcairn XFX cooler: (from techreport)

That said , there's no reason to buy XFX anymore since they dropped lifetime warranty, just like EVGA did. (http://www.techpowerup.com/159346/xfx-discontinues-double-lifetime-warranty-with-new-radeon-graphics-cards.html)

Dude my 7870 dd has heatpipes and it absolutely sucks for cooling. So i dont understand your point.

Meeeh... not impressed. At least they changed the cooler. It would be a bit stupid if they just changed the number from R7970 to R9-280X
Still, after what they did with voltage locking the 7970s I will never ever buy an xfx product again. Bastards.

Ok so I understand this is a 7970 on a redesigned PCB. How long is it? I really would like to get one of these if they come with free games.

Also do the new R series do up to 5 monitors? cause I'm seeing two dvi's, 2 mini display ports and a HDMI

My card only do 3, despite the 5 connectors.

So, the same 680 to 770 thing. The R9 280X will probably perform slightly better than the 7970 GHz simply because of higher memory and better power delivery. Will all 280X's have unlocked voltage or just the XFX pictured? (That cooler looks awful from a cooling standpoint, by the way, unless it vents air out of the sides / front like most aftermarket multi-fan coolers do.)

I'm almost cool with this, but we'll have to see how substantial an improvement it actually is over the 7970. I see 7970s for $280 now, plus three game codes you can sell off for $5-10 each for another little mini-rebate; that's a freakin' lot of performance for $280, potentially $250. Unless 7970's dry up pretty quick, I still think they'll be better for most buyers.

reminds me how they recycled the 8800GT like 4 o 5 times. Every iteration was a little bit better, but only marginally. The last one was what? 9800GTX? or did they keep it going even after that? I had my hopes up to see a reasonably useful fanless card with the 28nm, but it seems like that isn't going to happen.
