[AT]Understanding AMD's Mantle - Page 12

What SHOULD have been open source a long time ago is DirectX. There's no telling how many years MS pushed us back... but if the time ever comes, I'll be happy to give them the boot.
What I gather from OPEN is that anyone, being devs, can use it free, not charged for its use. Opensource would mean it would work with any setup and seeing how it says specifically that GCN architecture is the necessary component for performance increase, I think that precludes open source and makes just OPEN more apparent.

Opensource = anyone can access the source.

Truly excited for this, hopefully it means that I will be able to play bf4 maxed out at 1440p with 120fps using two 280x or 290x (have yet to decide which to buy).
I very much doubt it will be open source. It would give too many secrets/tech info away to the competition.

not true open source is good and in this case it will make it easyer for game devs to use it for their games and can be wrote for linux also but right now it will be limited to just gcn cards we don't know if it it can be coded to run on other cards or not if it could that would be a huge gain for all pc gamers.

It's a low level API, it's sole purpose is to run on GCN. Not Kepler, not Fermi, heck not even VLIW4/5, building the API around one architecture is what gives it the extreme efficiency. Even if "porting" it to another architecture was possible, it'd be no better than using the more familiar and more developed DirectX or OpenGL APIs anyway.

Theoretically, Nvidia could mimic GCN with their own particular architecture, but that's not going to happen. They'll probably introduce their own API or OpenGL extension optimized for Maxwell, if not Kepler.

It might help devs understand the code, but linux support is largely up to AMD at this point. They write the drivers, and no-one else is developing mantle.

It is a low level API, there is nothing to open the source of. They support it on their drivers and you just use any kind of your source to send commands of the API. They could of course make libraries or whole engines with the API but that's optional.

I'm hopeful for Mantle and anything like it. Anything that brings us closer to "real mode" like usability of our hardware again is a good thing.

RedHat is in the HSA foundation too iirc
