Upgrading Sound System - Home Theater or Logitech/Other? - Page 3

The BS41's will sound better, regardless of a subwoofer being present or not, but if it will be a while before you add the sub, then you'll especially notice a difference. The BS41's have a 5.25" mid driver vs the BS21's 4" driver, and the BS41 is "rated" for 45hz vs 55hz for the smaller brother.

In subjective terms, the BS41 produces mid-bass without struggling and can even present some real bass without overextending itself, whereas the BS21 cannot provide any "real" bass and the mid-bass rolls off too early.

You would think that the BS21 would pair better with a sub then, but actually it's the BS41, with the larger driver and lower frequency extenuation, that is better paired with a sub. This is because subwoofers provide sounds at such low frequencies that the human ears don't really perceive localization, but mid-bass IS localized. With the BS21, you would have a rolled-off mid-bass from the speakers combined with a subwoofer trying to extend upward to ~200hz and create sounds it just wasn't designed to make, whereas with the BS41's you would have the mid-bass from the speakers and the bass from the subwoofer with no roll-off or over-extenuation.

I use my Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 with an E6 amp via 3.5mm audio out on my Samsung LED TV on a flat EQ.

Works like a charm and sounds phenomenal. Don't have to spend a lot of money, just don't get a home theater in a box setup. Bleh.

and a set of speakers of your choice.

I use the JBL ES30's for my computer, but have the pioneer andrew jones for my home theatre(2 sets of BS22's, FS52's, and the C22). I love both speakers, but really like the upper extension of the JBL's. I like the sound from these. The BS22's were used before this, and lacked a little bit in the upper range, but were still very impressive. That little 4" woofer ha some deep down extension that will really surprise you.

Thread Starter
Turns out our Sony subwoofer that we use for our soundbar doubles as a receiver and an amplifier! I guess I had just figured it was active because it was cheap (like $160) so I think I'll be using that as an amp with the BS41's for a while, as I'm sure it's better then a mini amplifier where I would just be using an AUX cord between it an my computer. The only thing is it only supports A/V and HDMI, which means I won't be able to use my sound card at all. Unfortunate, but I think it's definitely better then just having a single 3.5mm input.
