Whats the best UK ISP? - Page 3

I've been doing some research and it appears the exchange in my area would allow for a good Sky broadband connection. And seeing as I can get it for 20 per month, I think it's the best deal. I shall consult my neighbors as BearyBear suggested though smile.gif Thank you all for the replies. Feel free to add to the thread if you have more input on these ISPs smile.gif

Ok, I've moved in, and as it turns out another person in the house also has sky and he gets 2Mbps down frown.gif he let me use it until I get my own connection, but it kinda sucks. So Sky is out, Virgin was out from the begging. The only thing really left is Plusnet, but they say the connection will be 8Mbps, which really just means half of that at best.

What do you guys think? What would you do?

Well, according to information on speedtest.net, for the UK in terms of bandwidth (both up, down and 'quality') I'd say sky actually pretty crap as an ISP, Virgin ironically is the best by far, with Plusnet in second, and BT in third.

The UK internet relies on the same copper cables that have always been used and they are enough, but the hardware used in the exchanges needs upgrading, and in many areas, especially more quiet or rural haven't had the exchanges upgraded. All you can do is put up with crap speeds and hope they might upgrade the exchange in your area some time in the next 5 years or move. No matter what ISP you choose, they will still be limited by the same network infrastructure, the only difference is if they rent it for more, they get priority usage or a 'bigger slice of the pie'.

But with the choice of ISP again. Sky has rubbish bandwidth overall and Virgin gives you crap network hardware and throttles/shapes like a beast. Now that leaves Plusnet and BT, it might surprise you to know Plusnet is owned by BT, they are the same company, Plusnet branded is though cheaper and has better results overall regarding bandwidth though their network hardware is cheaper than BT branded, some people have seen improvements when replacing filters etc.

I'd recommend you go with Plusnet, but see what BT offers you and compare the two, if they offer the same thing for the same price you may as well get the better BT branded network hardware.

Well thank for the reply Bearybear.

I ended up going with Sky either way. BUT I got their Fibre Unlimited plan which should give me up to 40Mbps. So in other words I should be getting about 10Mbps, which I can live with since I'd be the only one using it. I would've chosen BT seeing as it's almost he same price for their fibre but their minimum contract for unlimited fibre connection is 18 month minimum and I needed a 12 months contract. Their loss. Just hoping for the best now with Sky. If I get 25% of the speed they promise with their fibre network, I'll be happy. smile.gif Now we wait, 4 weeks for the engineer to come. frown.gif
