Flashing BIOs worth it?

Thread Starter
I was thinking about flashing my 7950 to the 7970, but I wasn't sure if it is even worth it. Some benchmarks show increase in performance, but others don't. Can I get some input on this please biggrin.gif

Not worth it, all it does is change memory timings. The shaders can not be unlocked because they are laser cut.

Not true, I have the gigabyte hd7970 rev 2.1 and before I flashed my bios the most OC I can get stable was 1030core 1390memory. Stock was 1000core 1375memory at 1.17volt.

After I flashed my bios and edit the voltages I was able to get it stable to 1070core 1420memory at 1.2volt.

I know it isn't much, but if you look into my specific card that's very good. Word of warning do not buy the rev 2.1.

Some bios will give you better OC but its a gamble. OCing is always a hardware thing. If the hardware cannot handle it, no bios will help.

Not true? You dont know much do you? 7xxx series are not like 6xxxx series where you can flash from 6950 to 6970 bios.
On 7 series yes you can flash, but your not getting a 7970 cause like I said the shaders are laser cut, so you can NOT unlock them.

And even if your just happy with different memory timings its risk. I tried it myself and it only lead to instability.

My advice leave the stock bios, and if you do attempt to flash hope you have a dual bios switch. Just OC the card with stock bios, simple as that.
