[polygon]Microsoft and Sony could be ‘hostile’ to AMD’s Mantle API, Carmack says - Page 4

I dont understand why developers would have an issue with this...how is this any more difficult than previous generation consoles? In fact since all consoles are x86 now, porting should be easier. Now AMD released the API for their console hardware which for the first time happens to be the same hardware that is in PCs so somehow developers would not like this? As far as Sony and MS...I can see MS with DX to lose, but I think they have much to gain as well.

I dont follow carmack, but i wouldnt be surprised if he had a bone to pick with both AMD and Nvidia after the huge failure of rage. He blamed the texture popping and other issues on bad drivers.

im not in favor of Mantle as its proprietary and not an open platform. i dont want to have to choose Mantle or Physx

Not unexpected.

I had to laugh at all the people saying that Mantle would be used on both the PS4 and XBO. Not only is this announcement WAY TOO LATE for either company to risk their multi-billion dollar console launch, there is no way in heck that Microsoft would just happily give up their DirectX lock hold on gaming API standards.

During release: Sorry bros no CPU's this month, production's kinda slow... come back next month! (owned)

And if AMD pulled that garbage, I would think that both Sony and Microsoft would sue AMD into bankruptcy. They are smart companies and most likely already have contracts as to the number of CPU's that AMD is to deliver. If they violate that, AMD will be dead.

Carmack used the be "THE INNOVATOR" now, sad to say, but he's not at the forefront. He's goin VR, but it's far from mainstream. His mega textures and other things that he tried to implement in RAGE didn't really take off.

So he's like" it's gonna be hard for a new gizmo to get general acceptance"..in refering to Mantle.

Carmack...stop talking and work full-time Doom 4 and Quake multiplayer next-gen...and make it mantle-friendly lol!(pun)....

I agree in that I haven't been too impressed by his recent contributions. However, it's clear from watching the Quakecon keynotes of the last few years he knows more about both the hardware and software side of the business than anyone else in a position like his. Ironically, he may not understand Mantle that well...

..

Lol, you keep saying this everywhere.

Mantle is not a DirectX replacement, at least today it is not. It is just giving GCN based GPUs a performance boost. So why exactly would MS feel threatened and block Mantle?
Also, only Frostbite 3 has confirmed Mantle usage, it remains to be seen how many engines and games will adopt it.

So lets just wait a little, ok?

Everyone is acting like it's doomsday.
