It's good for at least 3 things, not even taking into account its potential HTPC capabilities. Firstly, you can play any non-exclusive game at much higher fidelity and frame rates than on any console. Secondly, it can serve as a machine to run apps like Netflix, Hulu, or any of those other media platforms that are either already out or soon forthcoming. Thirdly, for those of us who have physical friends instead of just internet acquaintances, this gives us the ability to stream things to an open environment with a couch for everyone to sit on and a larger display that everyone can easily see and fit in front of, this in addition to my first point.
It gives those capabilities for sub-$200 in each new location you want it at, though I'm sure they'll offer beefier options that allow the power to run many games locally rather than always streaming.
