Need suggestions on upgrading to a new CPU.

Thread Starter
First of all, I'm a noob. This is my first thread, and I'm hoping to get good replies on this site.

Okay, so I've got a Phenom II X4 970 BE clocked at 3.9 GHz, with it's CPU/NB @2400; it's paired with a GTX 760. I'm positive that my CPU is holding back my GPU in games like Battlefield 3 64 Player MP and other CPU intensive titles. I'm now thinking of getting an FX 6300 or a 8320. Do you think it's worth the upgrade? Or should I go Intel?

Any help is much appreciated. smile.gif

Either go with a FX-8320/8350 or a Intel i5 4670k / i7 4700k.

Depends on the motherboard. If youve got a solid enough board, get the 8320 and overclock its guts out. If youve got a midrange or lower board, get a 6300 and overclock it. The 8320 really sucks down the juice so youll need a pretty beefy motherboard to handle it without throttling down.

My motherboard is an Asus M5A88-M. I'm currently using a Corsair H60 for cooling my CPU. Also, I don't get what you mean by "throttling." Are you referring to CPU Clock Speeds or Voltage? My motherboard does throttle my voltage at times as it has VDroop, but it isn't severe. I can deal with it by using AMD OverDrive, but I'm currently using Bios to OC.

These are the specs of my board: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A88M/#specifications

Any idea how good it'll do with an FX 6300 or an 8320?

It can handle either at stock speed, but it wouldn't handle them if you are planning to oc them. Most 4+1 power phase is not good for ocing FX chips.

I don't think its a good idea if your already throttling your current chip,,the vishera is even more power hungry,,,your saying Vdroop,,well maybe your PSU isn't up to snuff,,,,
you will never overclock either the 6300 or 8320 with that board,,so maybe a new board,,,

I'm using that PSU, so I doubt it's the problem.

Besides, I already confirmed that this is a VDroop issue. I have to set the voltage a little higher than what is required and then the board supplies the amount of voltage required to stabilize the CPU. If I'm upgrading my motherboard, I might as well go Intel.

Thanks for replying. Just curious, will an FX 6300 be bottlenecked by a single 760?

ya intel is an option,,,i have no complaints,,,don't forget that 970x4 is a very worthy chip yet,,in single threaded things it will beat the 8350,,

It won't. You can overclock the FX 6300 on a 4+1 phase mobo provided the vrm's are cooled and are of good quality. The number of phases don't always count. It's the quality of those phases. Look at my sig rig.

Thanks for clarifying that, mate. That's all I needed to know.
