cheap memory for lightly overclocked 8350 build

I'm looking at the possiblity of moving to AMD 8 core. I understand AMD memory works differently than intel, and therefore I am at sea as to memory timings and speeds.

I would like to do an 8350 or 8320 gaming build. I am assuming I need at least 8-12gig or ddr3. Probably atx, I need 1 pcie and one pci open after I throw in a gpu. Something that appears quite difficult on matx.

I don't need the fastest memory on the planet. I would like to overclock a bit to get maximum value for money, but I'm likely to cool on air, and not very expensive air, (see budget build) so I won;t be pushing the motherboard that hard.

How little can I get away with spending on ram? and what kind do I want to look for?

Maybe a good 1600mhz kit with tight timings.

Like a Corsair Vengeance Blue if you're on budget?

What kind of motherboard do you have?

not determined yet. Most likely atx is all I got atm, and that;s because i need to run wifi and a tv tuner. I will now go look up vengence blue. I'v a,ways considered memory a commodity item and had no interest in branding. As such I know little about various models

One thing I am noticing, is the fast cheap ram appears to come without heatsinks. Dare I buy this stuff? or is that for no overclock builds?

Yah, I check for out any 990fx matx boards, pretty much none lol.

Just get a midtower and you should be fine with cooling and cable management.

ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z would be the best for ATX, not cheap. For gaming or high overclocks.

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 would be the budget choice.

I notice you;re posting from hawaii. My interestin in 8 core amd is I am suspecting it will become particularly handy when the new PS4/xbox ports hit. I am attempting to futureproof a bit. Would you consider this a smart or foolish move?

Can't say really, might need to ask someone more experienced in RAM.

I've only used Heatsink-less ram in stock builds for offices and stuff (ECC server ram is a different story), I prefer heatsinks, 1 for looks, and 2 for protection from heat, dust and fingers.

one other thing. I am perusing newegg, while reading the internet equivalent of ram timings for dummies http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Understanding-RAM-Timings/26/3 and I notice some ram, especially the tight stuff, has only 2 err 3 numbers printed. so instead of seeing 9-9-9-24, all I see is 8-8-8. this confuses me.

yeah, Im a bit worried too. I don't go in for peekaboo window cases so looks mean nothing, but your protection point has a lot of merit. difference appears to be $3-4 a stick. I'll pretend the sinkless memory doesn't exist.

Yah, I live in Hawaii LOL

I don't have alot of experience with AMD, only build 1 system so far from them, basically a renderbox. But for performance, I'd actually go with the X79 platform.( if I could afford it)

Also, there's no such thing as future-proofing, well at least not past 2-3 years. My advice is to get the best CPU and GPU you can afford, and upgrade everything else overtime.

The FX-8350 should be fine for a few years. I'm gonna rock my i5-3570k for at least 2 years. Maybe change cooling and such for better overclocks.

ah, so tidbits from the AMD gpu expo will not be forthcoming. Oh well. My thought is that AMD's new control of the console market may open up new capabilities for amd 8 cores. it's kind of a shot inthe dark at this point though. Plus, it's cheap.
