8 core opterons for $60 each. I'm really tempted to build a 4p folding rig, but I'm not sure if I can find a cheap enough mobo for it.

4p 8 core opterons at 2Ghz-ish should pump out about 0.4 million ppd right?

Edit: Do you guys know where to find cheap used G34 4p mobos? New ones costs $660 which defeats the purpose of cheap CPUs

I've seen 6128s go even lower than that, around $40 each, haha.  The motherboard is the caveat though, I don't know of any "cheap" 4P boards, new, or used.  Maybe if you can find somebody selling one on [H], or ocn MP, but I haven't seen any lately, haven't really been looking either.

Even the g34 2P boards were over $300 last time I looked at them, and you really wouldn't want a 2P with 6128s anyway.

Well, are Xeon 2650s worth it? I found a few 8 core 2ghz base clock xeons for $150+$40 shipping.

It depends on what the turbo on them is, if it's 2.4ghz on all 8 cores, they wouldn't be too shabby at all, heck for the price 2.0ghz wouldn't be terrible..  You find 2P Intel boards for under $400, Supermicro, and ASRock on newegg.

I actually just got an open box Supermicro x9DAi for $270 on newegg 2 weeks ago, and I am happy with it so far. I have it paired with 2 e5-4640 chips.

Thanks, I would of reped you if I could.

The turbo goes up to 2.7, it should match if not beat 4 AMD 8 cores in ppd, while using half the power biggrin.gif

Time to get rid of my i7.

Yeah, that is a good deal for 8 cores @ 2.7ghz, nab them up.

There's no way 2.7 is the all-core turbo. That's a single core at 2.7. The default all-core tubro for a 2650 is 2.3

But is it possible to lock the CPU to single core turbo Speeds?

Man that ASUS Z9PA-D8 looks promising.
