Windows XP SP3 fresh install, windows update broken.

Apparently this is a common problem after Microsoft released some kind of patch that breaks Windows Update. I can get to the website and begin to search for updates but it never stops searching. The supposed solutions to the problem that I've been able to find aren't working either. Has anyone experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?

And before you say 'upgrade to 7' or something along those lines, this is an older Dell that I am working on for a friend.

how long have you been waiting to update? my experience with updates has been very slow. i have to go check for updates, then maybe an hour later, it come up with a bunch of stuff.

i forget the name, but did you install the Microsoft Update manager (not sure if this is what is is called). when visiting the page for the first time, it will ask you to install thins add-on, which then helps it some.

I let it go for like 25ish minutes. Letting it go for like an hour sounds ridiculous. Didn't have to get that update because the computer is running SP3.

This too happened to me last week. I went to the updates site and installed the update software (look under the address bar for an activex install prompt) and waited in frustration whilst it searched endlessly for nothing.
I cancelled and changed the automatic update time to five minutes from the current time, rebooted the system and waited. After about an hour or so I was prepared to admit defeat when the downloading updates icon miraculously appeared in the system tray area.
IIrc it found 132 updates excluding SP3.

try going into the CMD prompt, and type "wuauclt /detectnow" and press enter. That should invoke the windows update service.

You can also try "wuauclt /reportnow" after 10 mins or so

Also, you might want to try installing this manually - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23281

The easiest way:

- Turn off automatic updates. Reboot.

- Download and install Internet Crapxplorer 8. Reboot.

- Turn on automatic updates. Updates will now download and install as they should.

Download the service Packs from the MS web site and install. That will usually take care of it.
