GTX 550 SLi crash question

Thread Starter
Ok, this one's got me stumped. I have 2 GTX 550's in SLi. I am using EVGA PrecisionX to monitor card functions.

Quite often when I'm playing a game like Battlefield BC2 or BF3 the cards will suddenly shut down and recover. And I mean they act like they are powering off- screens go blank, fans spin down, then a second later they recover (albeit while the game crashes due to Direct3D errors). Looking at the log in PrecisionX has both cards running stock clocks, stock voltage, max fan speed, roughly 70% load, etc. When the spike happens the graph drops to near-0 voltage, the clocks fall to 0, the fans fall to roughly 30% speed, then it magically recovers but comes back with the 2D settings (lower everything) instead of the 3D settings.

Would this most likely be a faulty power supply, faulty cards or what? The power supply is an older 1000w Ultra X3, the peak power draw is roughly 525 watts in current configuration.

What drivers are you using? Personally I have seen this happen with 320.xx, and the newest 327.23 WHQL, but nothing with the driver I am using which is 326.19 Beta, 326.41 and 326.80 have both had lower FPS in BF3, CoD4 (obsolete I know), and Splinter Cell Blacklist as well as the synthetic benchmarks like Valley and Heaven, although no crashing.

I'm using the 327.23. It's happened to me for the last 3 driver iterations though so I guess I should try older versions.

I do hear some static/crackle/pop in my headphones (USB 3.0 PCIe card on a 5v rail) immediately prior to the cards crashing.

Try going back to the last properly working WHQL, which as far as I understand is 314.22. No one that I know that is still using that driver has any issue whatsoever.

Yep, that's what I went with. Big FPS hit in most of my games (Planetside 2 went from terrible to unplayable) but I haven't had any crashes yet.
