Need a laptop for coding. Languages listed.

EDIT: Also according to the Apple store I get £183 off Macs for attending my specific university.

Hi. I have started my first year of physics at university. We are learning to code alongside doing maths, mechanics, and other modules.

This year we will cover:
Maple
Wolfram Mathematica
Python

In future years we will cover:
MATLAB
MATHLAB
METHLAB biggrin.gif
C++
And probably others but those are the essentials for the next 2 years or so.

I can do some of these at home, but there are cases when I want to code in Maple/Wolfram Mathematica on the move, or code during lectures (we have a couple of lectures before going to computer labs), etc.

Also, I want to try out OS X properly, I've not had a laptop since like 2006, and I would love a laptop with a super-long battery life. I was one of those "minimum brightness, turn off Bluetooth, close unnecessary applications!" guys when I had a laptop.

So I thought, would a Macbook Air be a good choice if it was for nothing but my coding? Unless there is a way to install OS X onto a non-Apple branded laptop. Although, that's actually against Apple's ToS IIRC (and Hackintosh discussion isn't allowed here...)

Template (I've crossed out the ones which don't concern me):

What is your maximum budget? £1000.

What country are you in? UK.

What will be the uses of this laptop? Coding on the move. Languages and IDEs above.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? No. But I want to try out OS X properly.

What screen size do you require? 13" or greater.

What screen resolution do you require?

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? New

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) At least 6 hours

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?

What operating system do you need? (if any) Either OS X or Ubuntu 12.04

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)

How much hard drive space do you need?

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)

Is there anything else we need to know?

Look into used/refurbished 13" Pro/Airs still under warranty?
You can sometimes find some real gems.

I got mine for 900 CAD (600 Pounds?) on craigslist with still 2 years of Apple Care.
Only 100 Battery Cycles. After putting nearly 500 on it the battery still goes for 4.5 hours (Medium Adobe Work) to 6 hours (Web/Text Editors).

i5-2415M, 4GB, 320GB, swapped for 8GB and a 120GB SSD and upgraded to Mountian Lion from Snow Leopard runs like new all the time and handles everything I need it to at work.

Nice. Will look into it.

EDIT: OK so this is weird. This ultra-book is has exactly the same spec as an MBA but with a lower battery life. However even without the £183 student discount it's more expensive than the Apple device (both new). What?!
