A lot of games have a form of lag compensation. If you play against people with high pings you can see this behavior by dying after you go into cover as your player is still on their screen at that point.

Most of the time everyone else is experiencing what you are as well, though.

One thing you can do with DSL is have your provider disable interleaving. This should lower your average latency by about 20 ms to all WAN destinations.
