7970 now or wait for R280X?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a new GPU very soon (by end of October) and decided to go the AMD route this time since they seem to offer the best bang for the buck. So my question is should I go ahead and get a 7970 now, or hold off and get a R280X when they come out. The reason I ask is because I read a news article posted here that the first R280X's will all be reference design when they release and will be the same price as 7970's, meaning that I could get a better cooled card for the same price by buying a 7970 before they're discontinued. If a 7970 is my best option then what brand/model should I get? Any other advice is appreciated, this will be my first AMD/ATI card.

Since we still don't have any real world performance numbers on the new cards, I would advise that you at least wait until we have those. Then you will have the information you need to make the best decision.

Problem is I'm in the same boat as the OP. There are some NIIIICE deals now on the 7970s

I just picked up an MSI 7970 oc be for £239 .. Bargain .. I'll worry about performance when the R280 does something the 7970 can't just now

There are going to be good deals next month too. Prices on 7970 can only go down.

Im just going to wait for the 280x and then decide.

I am in the same boat, but plan on waiting for the R9 cards to come out.
All I here about are the 290x/280x/270x/etc... What about the non "x" cards-Are they still coming out?
I cant seem to find any info on them. I would like to know about the 290 and 280.

I plan on running whichever card I get under water, so the stock cooler doesn't matter.

I think best bet on deals, unless you have to act now, would be to wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday before too long and take advantage of the super deals from a new product line release, old line price decreases, AND holiday deals. I may pick up another 7950 for dirt cheap around then. Tons of 2nd hand deals also from all the early adopters and teens getting their holiday money and blowing it for the deals... and parents buying early for Xmas.

Also, you can save a little by going the 7950 route and doing a mild OC. Might even be able to pick up 2 of them cheap using the said deals I mentioned above.

Patience is still a highly valued virtue.

The problem with Black Friday/Cyber Monday is from my experience not everything is on sale. Just select picks they make and it's take it or leave it from there. But I am tempted to wait also if the prices on the new cards aren't going to be some over the top insane amount. I'm thinking about going plan B and getting a second 7870 for 150 (after rebate) and crossfiring to hold me over till then. My rig is eventually going to be the wife's rig so..
