AMD Phenom X4 945 vs FX4100?

Hello, I have both of these CPUs and don't know which one to install into my rig. I've done some research and it seems that it can really go either way. Any thoughts?

I'd be inclined to go with the FX because of it's "newer" architecture.

Phenom II x4s get better IPCs than Bulldozer and possibly Piledriver. The only reason to use FX CPUs is for more than four cores.

IPC meaning better single threaded performance?
Here's a FX 6300 with 2 cores locked down at 4.8Ghz.

Now Single threaded performance at 5Ghz-

IPCs meaning instructions per clock. If I'm not mistaken, the FX CPUs overclock better than just about anything else, but they are lacking in single-threaded performance when compared to all of Intel's recent offerings and even some of AMD's previous chips. At the same clockspeeds, a quad-core Phenom II will beat a quad-core Bulldozer. Your benchmarks showed around a 25% performance boost with a 25% higher clockspeed Piledriver CPU, which is around 10% faster than Bulldozer.

In single threaded performance an FX 4300 overclocked to the max will beat a Phenom II x4 overclocked to the max(single threaded performance). If the Phenom II x4 stops at 4Ghz the FX 4300 will take it all the way to 5Ghz, so why stop at 4Ghz smile.gif

Thanks for the replies everyone biggrin.gif.

I went ahead and installed the FX4100. I literally just flipped a coin since the performance of both are similar. I don't really play games anymore and I figured the performance difference in Photoshop would be negligible. I have an i7 Ultrabook coming in on Tuesday so any serious computing will be done on that instead.

Thanks again!
