I just wish metro didn't exist, have no use for it.

Isn't it about time this thread gets locked down? It's way off topic, repeating the same beaten to death arguments.

At least MS is trying to give us something fresh and I applaud them for that even if the execution still needs work....
What are you talking about? I've given windows 8 more than enough chances. I've installed it on a VM and used it for a month. We started using it at work as well. It's just a bad interface, period. Anyone who says otherwise, frankly doesn't know how to use a desktop computer.

The addition of the start button in 8.1 was just a slap in the face, since every single power user will use the keyboard anyway.

BOB also "worked".

But plain and simple people are smart enough to not waste time on stupid interfaces.

There's nothing sacred about the start menu. It works, but so does Ubuntu's side bar and menu system. What doesn't work is bad interfaces like the start screen taking up all the space for literally no reason except to be more tablet-like.

Can't wrap my mind around this one. Win8 is far more funtrional for far more scenarios than Win7 is. Ever try to use Win7 on a touch screen? Or on a tablet? rolleyes.gif

Windows 7 lays the groundwork for touch usage by actually making the standard size taskbar taller (you can set it to use small icons so it's narrower, just about the size it has in Windows Vista), this was made specifically with touch in mind. What they should have done in Windows 8 is leverage that advantage and have it always appear and be the only taskbar, for both desktop applications and Modern apps, making using the OS a unified experience. But that would mean the Modern UI had to run as a layer on the desktop to which you could easily switch to and from by using the taskbar.

Alas, Windows 8.1 does not solve that major problem. Context switching is still there, the taskbar disappears when you go to the Modern interface, making you lose track of all your desktop applications running, and you still have two taskbars to tackle.

If you don't like the taskbar, cite reasons, just don't come with the same old " I'm personally sick to death of the same old desktop with the same old taskbar and the same old start menu.", there is no science, no ergonomics, no usability fundament to your exacerbated laments. When you're criticizing something, please cite reasons, otherwise you just come off as irrational and temperamental, just like criticizing the wheel as boring because it's round.

Knowing the vast majority of OCN seems to be plagued with people who think they know what they are talking about, but don't, I disagree. The OS is fine, all they did was change to the start screen. It amazes me how much you guys complain over a change like that. No other real changes have been made. We are crying for no reason. Not wasting my time on you anymore, bub. If you don't like Windows 8, fine. But don't go saying the OS is broken. I don't like Linux, but that doesn't mean it sucks. I just don't like it.

The PROBLEM is people who don't LIKE the new UI automatically jump on the WINDOWS 8 SUXZ0RZ Wagon. It's so stupid. The OS works, I've proven it by youtube videos, and I'll continue to do so. AND... IIRC, MS is simply making the start screen prettier and adding a start screen button for people without the window key on their keyboard? What the heck do we need a button for? It's amazing how people call that a start, lol. Just deal with it brah, it's not rocket science.

The only people that constantly, and I really mean constantly make "WINDOWS 8 SUXZ0RZ" 'nerd rage' caricatural type of comments are people defending Windows 8. That really says a lot about the stance you guys take when approaching the matter.

This. This. This.

It's about making interfaces that make sense for any given use, it's not about keeping the Start menu if something better can be brought forth. Dividing your workflow into two different, non-mingling contexts, with two taskbars and with functionality that was once in one place scattered across the UI, is not an improvement to desktop users however.

The other day I made an extensive post criticizing Windows 8 on the Windows 8 Challenge thread started by none other than KSIMP88, and I didn't mention the Start menu once.

Because a familiar interface is familiar.... it's just what the people want.

What's so hard to understand by that? They should have both if it really is an issue... to allow for transition, not a "cold turkey" approach. Let the people decide what they want (what a novel concept huh?)

Obviously the vociferous Win8 supporters that you guys all complain about so much would seem to indicate that there are in fact people who do like the new interface. I'm typing this now on my Win8 Touchscreen Ultrabook that I wouldn't have even bought if it had Win7 on it because Win7 on touch sucks...

but you're forgetting that touch sucks on notebooks. at least with a 2 in 1 device you can use touch in a way that isn't ergonomically painful.

what exactly does touch on a notebook bring to the table, beyond smudges and arm cramps? gestures? yeah those are actually ergonomic when used with a trackpad. windows 8 should have brought touchmode as an option for instances when it is useful instead of designing their whole ui around a failed mindset

We're not trying to say that you shouldn't have it either.... when the option can exist to have both.

If it works for you... great, for those who it doesn't, there still needs to be another better option. There is room in here for all of us. smile.gif
