Looking for a New TV, 60" Range

Because my beloved Panasonic 58" Plasma bit the dust and I cant repair it frown.gif

I have it essentially narrowed down to two different sets, One Plasma, One LED/LCD... I'm looking for something around the same size (58-60) that wont completely ravage my bank account (IE $1200-ish, Maybe a hair more),

On the Plasma front we have the Samsung PN60F5500, and on the LED/LCD front we have the Sharp Aquos LC-60LE650U, Unfortunately the place I was planning to order from does not carry Panasonic, and I dislike the stupid chrome bezel nonsense on their current TVs.. Ok and I might be slightly mad because my Panny is dead... wink.gif I think thats expected

TV will be in a light-controlled space, Usually kept pretty much pitch black, its used for normal TV watching (Obviously) through FiOS, as well as streaming video from Netflix, Hulu, my desktop PC/DVR and of course, Blu-Rays and games from my PS3/360/PC, I see absolutely no need for the "Smart TV" junk as I have a PS3 and a 360 to handle those tasks...

I never had an issue with my Panasonic and burn in(Despite using it as a second monitor frequently), and i am the first to admit i was never very careful with it, my only complaint on it was that it generated a lot of heat, but it was a livable problem

3DTV is nigh unwatchable to me, At least on almost every demo I've seen, it kinda hurts my eyes and I dont see much of a point in it, So its a moot point... if I had it I might try watching it at home once though, Because hey, Might as well.

Also a moot point are the built in speakers as they will be used precisely never

I TRIED to go look for both TVs locally and ended up giving up, Best Buy had the Sharp (Not the Samsung) but it looked like complete...well.. Not very good... Sears (I walked through it to get to the mall and thus the Best Buy) weirdly enough had the Sharp as well and it had a very impressive picture, but they were playing store demos that really showed me nothing about what the TV could do and the showroom was VERY brightly lit. So I'm essentially "flying blind" and relying on other people here. Which is new

My gut is torn, On the one hand, the Samsung is a Plasma and I know for a fact I havnt been a fan of many LCD TVs when I've watched them (Family members have them, albeit older non-LED models), Im one of the people whos VERY sensitive to the smooth motion nonsense, because even the 120hz LCDs dont look "smooth" (It takes going to a true 240hz one for it to "smooth" out for me)

But that said, weirdly enough Im fine with the LCDs in my M17x and my Dell IPS monitor.. and all my LCD monitors for that matter...and the Sharp in the store had a very good picture and seemed smooth enough (Albeit not as smooth as the 757U, which was a 240hz set, But the overall picture quality was less impressive on the 757...) and I wouldnt have the little thought in the back of my head about burn in... Plus I believe LCDs last longer.. Could be wrong on that though...

If you want a plasma, get a Samsung F8500 plasma. The brightness is amazing for a plasma (one of plasma's weak points) and is the best looking plasma in bright conditions. In low light/darkness, the F8500 basically matches the best Panasonics and even the Pioneer Kuro in terms of black depth and contrast.

However I highly suggest you get an LCD LED TV. They've caught up with plasma TVs in terms of black depth and contrast and are usually much better in normal brightness conditions. If course if you're a movie watcher who owns a home entertainment cinema, then maybe plasma is more suited for your needs. Otherwise, a top of the range Samsung LCD LED is a better investment in the long term than a plasma.

If you're not a fan of motion blur, plasma TVs are better for that. If that's the case, go for the Samsung F8500 plasma:

Samsung - 64" Class (64" Diag.) - Plasma - 1080p - 600Hz - Smart - 3D - HDTV

Samsung - 60" Class (59-9/10" Diag.) - Plasma - 1080p - 600Hz - Smart - 3D - HDTV

Samsung - 51" Class (50-3/4" Diag.) - Plasma - 1080p - 600Hz - Smart - 3D - HDTV

No offense but you just recommended a tv that costs almost 3 times my budget... I'm sure its bloody fantastic, but still, Way out of the price range

I have a fairly high end home theater sound system setup(Which is why I couldnt give a crap if the TV had speakers), having too much brightness is actually my biggest concern with a LED LCD because the room is kept pretty much completely dark almost ALL the time, Blackout curtains and no lights on dark. Black level IS my concern, as is Blacklight bleed which are the two biggest complaints I've had when I've looked at LCDs in the past

I just ordered the Samsung PN60F5500. I haven't received it yet.

There is many features I wasn't expecting, nor planning to use with it, but welll it's there! Wifi, media reader and 3D...

I really like the size and the apparent great picture quality, COMPARED to my mid-range Samsung 40".

I'm paying $1200 CDN + Tx on it....I'm taking a 3 years extra warranty on it (that starts after the first year of manufacturer's warranty).

Looking forward to receive, unpack and watch blurays on that big screen!

I ended up going the other way and nabbing the Sharp LC-60LE650U after seeing it in a store and actually getting to play with it a little..

Been quite happy with it, even coming from a plasma.. it has very impressive black level actually (Granted NOT Plasma-black but vastly better than any other LCD TV I've seen) but it makes a very dark, very inky black (IE, the only time it DOESNT look black is if there is nothing on the screen but a blank black screen which..doesnt happen very often in movies) and the black -detail- is actually better than my old S2 panel could manage (IE i see things in dark scenes I didnt notice before) brightness and whites are no contest, far better than the S2 managed

Beyond that great contrast and everything, and motion smoothness is very good (no annoying motion blur or overprocessed SOE) the only negative I have about it is.. well i actually cant think of one.. its very thin and it kinda disturbs me if i go to tilt the screen on my mount (IE i think im going to twist it and BREAK it) but.. really i cant say thats a fair complaint given just about every other modern TV is equally thin...

Would definitely recommend this set to anyone looking for a good cheap 60" TV

I love my Plasma TV's... I have a mix of tv's in my house (5 in total). My living room currently has a 58" Samsung Plasma (the PN58C540). I also have a 55" Samsung LED (240hz) in my bedroom and a 50" Samsung Plasma in the basement (plus two smaller LED tv's in other bedrooms).

Plasma hands down gives the best picture quality. They blow away my 240hz Samsung LED (Which I bought hoping it would comparable).

The downsides to Plasma are weight and heat. My big Plasma in the living room weighs a ton. I am planning to replace it as I need something bigger for the space but I haven't seen anything bigger than a 60" in Plasma. (looking at the Samsung 74.5" LED or the Sharp 80").

I wish I could find an 80" Plasma although I would likely have to reinforce my wall to mount it tongue.gif

Already done guys.. TVs on my wall and everything.. wink.gif Thanks for the advice, albeit a bit late..

As I said I was very worried about the LED/LCD till I got it... on 98% of things the LCD looks as good or better than my older plasma, Yes one or two shows look slightly worse but not "bad" Mostly its just it has a flatter color reproduction which is more down to how i have it adjusted (and i might not be quite done with that in all honesty..)

Also Robilar, Polk Audio Monitor setup from the looks, correct? wink.gif I have RTi8s + CS20 + Monitor 30s with the PSW505 driven from a Pio Elite SC-27 wink.gif

-edit- and i paid about that for the 650U smart TV... So yeah wink.gif Pretty happy with my purchase
