A few questions about the Roccat Kone Pure Optical

Hey OC.net

So I have some questions regarding a couple mice but mostly my questions are about the Kone Pure Optical.

My first gaming mouse was the logitech G5 and I had that guy for years and loved it until it broke. Logitech was lovely enough to replace it... but with a G500 and while it was a decent substitute I still preferred the G5 for ergonomic reasons and for the firmer scroll. So I've never been 100% satisfied with this G500 and I think I might want to try out some other mice and see whats up. Going for styles similar to the G5 and after reading another thread here I've been most drawn to the Roccat Kone optical and the G400s. Before I get into questions I'll give you some information about myself and what I prefer.

My hand is a medium in size overall but my fingers can be considered a bit long. If I were to completely PALM my g500 my index finger comes flush with the tip of the mouse and my middle finger hangs over a half inch or so but I much prefer to use a claw/fingertip grip with this guy. When I claw the tips of my fingers are just about centered up with the middle of the scroll wheel. The G500 feels perhaps a bit too wide and a touch to heavy for me. And then there is this really sharp edge on the pinky side of the mouse near the tip where if I claw can make the mouse uncomfortable and fatiguing. The G500s thumb button are much to clustered for my taste, and only prefer two thumb buttons over 3 all stuffed into the same cutout of the mouse.

So, my questions are,

1: How firm is the mouse wheel compared to a g500, or a g5. Or even just a standard mouse for that matter.

2: I use a sandblasted glass mouse pad, has anyone has any issues with either the lazer or optical sense in a roccat mouse. I know its 2013 and most mice are capable of glass surfaces but I'd thought i would ask anyhow smile.gif.

3: What is the material and texture of the Kone optical? The g5 seemed to get it right on the rubber grips on the side but was a bit slick on the plastic for me. The g500 plastic is just right for me but the rubber feels like sandpaper and gave me goosebumps when I first held it.

4: I've never owned a roccat product before and am unsure about the product support and driver / software quality.

Like I said I'm leaning mostly toward the g5 and Roccat Kone Pure Optical and only based on what I remember liking in the past. I am most definitely open to any other suggestions outside these two and any advice of any kind is welcome as well as additional information on the Kone I may have overlooked. I don't need a mouse with more than 3500 DPI as I personally never go past 2200 anyway..

Bonus: Do the G500 and G400s have the exact same shell? It looks like it's more like the shell of the G5 which I prefer. If it's a copy in shape to the G500 I will scratch it off my list.

G400s shell is like the G5, not the G500.

1. Mouse wheel is much tighter feeling and doesn't have two modes like the G500.
2. Should be fine with the optical version. I did experience really bad lift-off jitter on all surfaces using the laser version, however. Could have been the mouse itself, not sure. Could be firmware updated.
3. Surface is similar to the "gritty" G500 paired with a matte finish (laser version at least)
4. Roccat driver support and drivers themselves are solid.

Edit: If it's up to the Kone Pure and the G400s, I highly recommend the latter due to your love of the G5 shape. Using the Kone Pure will take some serious getting used to because of the flat shape of its right side.

I always recommend to try out the shapes first.

Easily the most important factor when picking a mouse.

I hear the optical Kone Pure has a finish different than the lazer version. I guess its completely coated in the "soft touch" material which I have not experienced for myself. Thanks for the input. I do remember liking the G5 quite a bit more than the g500, but it has been some years since I held one. Not so worried about the flat side, the curved inset on the right side of the g500 digs into me.

I couldn't agree more. The problem is getting my hands on one to test it. The only location that has a decent selection of mice at a physical location is best buy. They don't even carry roccat brand and if they did it would be in a box and I would have to buy it before manhandling it frown.gif. I think my main concern with the optical Kone is the size. Not sure if it will be too small. The Kone pure lazer is 91% the size of the original kone, and the Kone pure optical is 91% the size of the kone pure lazer..

The Kone Pure Optical has the same coating like the Kone Pure and the Kone XTD too. The Kone Pure is 91% of the size of the Kone[+] / Kone XTD. The Kone Pure optical has the same size as the Kone Pure and the Kone Pure Color.

The Kone Pure Optical has a great firm scrollwheel that just feels fantastic. it has great, 0 travel distance buttons that just feel fantastic. Its tracking is bar none in terms of steadyness, for example with mouserate.exe it stays on 1000hz constantly with only +/- 10, unlike MANY other expensive mice (see current Zowie thread). The software, even though I didnt use it, seems well made and intuitive.

But it still is a mouse made for little girl hands which is why I simply cannot recommend it. Clawing felt uncomfortable with it as well as its rather slippery with the matte plastic finish and the shape is CLEARLY made for palm gripping.

This could have been a perfect mouse if using the XTD size.

Thank you for clearing up the size of the pure optical in reference to the XTD.

Damn I wish I could fondle one to see if it's a good size for me. I'm gonna have to try and draw it out on paper using measurements they gave me.. I'm really digging some of the features of this mouse more so than the g400. However FEEL is everything and that is just something I can't test at home. What size hands do you have?

I've been a Kone Pure Optical owner for three days now, and it's my first ROCCAT product.

I don't have the in-depth knowledge about mice some of the others around here have, but I can say that so far it's the sturdiest and highest quality built mouse I've ever used. Mice I've used as a basis of comparison are Razer's Diamondback, Lachesis, and DeathAdder 2013 - and Cyborg's MMO7. I also love the software. It's intuitive and very well put together. It doesn't feel and operate like some janky freeware.

I have medium/average sized hands (about 7.5ish inches from start of palm to end of middle finger). Jay is right, it's a fairly small mouse. For this mouse I use a hybrid of claw and fingertip grips and I find it comfortable and it suited me very well in a BF3 test. Grabbing it with the palm grip, my pointer and middle fingers extend past the mouse one and two buttons a quarter inch and half inch respectively.

My hands are on the bigger side. I palm the mx518 comfortably. or the 3.0. the 3.0 pretty much fits my hands like a glove but the buttons are just too terrible.
my hand measurs ~18.5 cm from tip of middlefinger to wrist.

Yeah not too sure then. My hand is about 8in wrist to tip or 19~20CM but my hand is more narrow than the average hand of my length.. I prefer fingertip grip so i might end up with the g400s despite prefering most of the features on the Kone such as that badass looking mouse wheel.

Edit : I just busted out two old mice stock mice from dell and KYE just for size comparison. Both of which have the same Length of 12 CM as the Pure optical but at their widest part are 5.5 cm and 6 cm and in terms of the length i seemed to easily be able to fingertip grip both of them so i may give it a whirl.
