Unsure what hardware is fault. Hard crash, no BSOD.

My current set up: http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/497/kgbk.png & Wishlist of it
Along with: Heatsink & SSD
Inside Case

I have my OS installed on my SSD, and everything else (That can) installed on my HDD. I finished building this computer 2 days ago and have been trying to stress test it after finally getting everything set-up. Four times today, streaming Left4Dead 2, I have hard crashed. I have Left4Dead 2 on my SSD.

Start up L4D2.
Stream 720@60
Never go over 50% CPU
CPU: Max 61c
GPU: Max 84c
An hour or so in, my entire screen goes black and I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, as if my GPU is disconnected and then either sound loops or I hear things still going on and then everything stops. I'm left with just a black screen but my computer tower and everything in it is still running (Fans, beeping lights, ect.) and I have to shut it down by holding the power button. I was hoping to start up my stream series this week but that looks like it will have to be on hold.

I haven't done any overclocking whatsoever, and everything in the BIOS is still left on "Auto" as I'm unsure what to change in this over-detailed BIOS (I was using an old BIOS/CPU before this). Could it be an unstable BIOS settings (Everything on AUTO) or could a piece of hardware be faulty? (IE. PSU/GPU/CPU/MOBO)?

EDIT: I would like to point out that I played Zombie Panic! Source for a few hours without any issue...

sounds like GPU overheating... what is the max temp for that GPU? 84 looks high.

It's completely stock/new. I can try setting the fan to 100% at all times but I don't think that's going to change much. I heard from a friend that the 7950 is notoriously high.

I managed to salvage a good 120mm fan from my old computer. I had the fan intake facing the inside of the computer. Even with it pulling air out it still is reaching 84c and I'm still hard crashing. I tried reversing the fan flow this time. The intake is facing outwards and pulling air in this time.

could possibly be faulty connectors from PSU.
but think it is most likely the card. can you re-seat heatsink on GPU? are your other temps on card good? my first 7870 was new and the heatsink was so loose, during extended gaming the TIM seeped out and dripped the heatsink fan causing it to freeze up on my next boot. after long painful cleanup (it was all over those tiny little resistors I keep hearing horror stories about getting knocked off) I dropped some Antec formula 7 on it and got about 6-7° drop on core under load.

BTW- before anything too painful, always check HDMI/VGA cords or whatever to save yourself a possible doh.gif

I fixed the problem. i guess it was the GPU overheating after all. I got two 120mm fans from my old case, both of them pulling air into the vent, and it lowered the max GPU to 78c, and the max CPU to 58c.. Unfortunately though the one pulling extra air into the CPU was already kinda dying so it's not pulling as much. Still, my CPU overheating isn't of big concern atm since it's not getting that hot.

Reseating the heatsink? I heard that the card paste was put on terrible so some people have tried reapplying it but I'm afraid to since i just got this computer and can't really risk having to drop another +100$ on i for a new GPU if I **** up thisone trying to reseat the heatsink.

I'll try looking around to see if the stock is overvolted and maybe I can lower the voltage. It's currently sitting at 1125.

Maybe it would be best to RMA the card, get something that runs equally great but at least cooled better?

Alright so I'm thinking about RMAing this card and using my GTX 260 temporarily. Now I just need to find a card that runs just as good and doesn't overheat as such because these temperatures are ludicrous.

not going to get an AMD better than 7950/70 unless you get one of those 7990's, which won't help heat issues. think 1125 is higher than stock but not positive. reseating isn't hard if you don't use a lot of paste. the rice drop is the best method IMO, but people all have their own ways. I agree with not messing with it if you are going to RMA it- so much easier to just not touch it.

think the best thing would be to reevaluate the airflow in your case. check around for others temps, but pretty sure these cards should run fine in a mid or full atx case with no problems as long as they are getting decent airflow. look up the CFM of your current fans, if they are below 50 then they are most likely considered silent fans, in which case you could upgrade to extreme fans. they will be a lot louder, but while gaming you wouldn't notice as much. can always buy a fan controller to turn them down when you are not gaming.

here's link to alternative cooling for it... warning- you will have to buy shim and have some sort of fan directly on the card to cool everything else.
