[solved] Home theatre noob wondering why no sound

Okay, bear with me as this isn't really my specialty.
I have a yamaha rx-v375 amp, LG BP630 Blu Ray player, xbox 360 and LG LM9600 HDTV. I've connected the TV directly to the hdmi out on the amp. The hdmi port 1 (ARC) on the tv and the hdmi out on the amp. Then I have the bp630 connected to hdmi port 1 on the amp (hdmi port that says bd/dvd). Then I have the xbox connected to hdmi port 2 on the on the amp. I have an spdif cable running from the tv to the AV4 port on the amp. I knew to do this because AV4 is marked spdif TV out.

Now my problem is that I get no sound when using the xbox and the blu ray player and anything else I connect via hdmi to the amp. However, the TV has 4 hdmi connections and anything I connect to the TV works 100%. What have I done wrong?

You don't need the SPDIF. HDMI carries audio as long as it is above HDMI 1.3, I believe.

Without the spdif I get the same problem but with no sound from the TV at all.

I managed to solve this problem with some luck.
The amp needs to be told what sound needs to go where from its options panel. So for every input you have to specify the different hdmi's and for the TV you have to specify spdif AV4. I find it very stupid. To make it just that little bit worse, when you switch between inputs, the amp doesn't recognise the change and you have to then go into the options again and tell it that you've switched inputs and you would like sound from hdmi 1,2, 3 etc. The only way around this is what yamaha have called scene selection. You basically program all audio and video into a single profile and switch to it. That said, it doesn't always work. Aaaand you can only have 4 profiles, 2 of which do not cater for video.

That's about the smartest set up of I've ever seen in an AVR. kookoo.gif

Well, I'm glad you at least solved your problem. My next suggestion was going to be go through the options and change those settings.
