Help w/ Strange HDMI audio problem

Thread Starter
So I just upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon HD 7970, and I am getting a strange noise in my HDMI audio. There is this very low level, repetitive, sort of "pph" sound. Hard to describe. It is not a pop. If you were to put your lips together and then blow out like you do when you make Horse lips. That very first audible separation of your lips is what this sounds like. I would not even notice it if I was not in front of the monitor by a foot or so.

I figured it might have been the Catalyst 13.10 beta drivers so I uninstalled that, and installed the 13.9 WHQL. This did not fix it, but the noise did stop after I had uninstalled all AMD drivers.

Oddly enough I can go into sound, and playback devices and disable everything there, and still the sound will be passing to my monitor. Even though other sounds will not

Any ideas?

Can you try a different HDMI cord? It sounds like when I had an issue with a car amp. It was a grounding issue. A new HDMI cord might solve your problem.

I did. It wasn't the cord. Thanks though

Do you still have the old card to test if the problem persists?

Yes, that was my next step. I will have to check that tonight.

After uninstall do a thorough clean up of Catalyst leftovers - user Files, App Data, Registry. There are a few programs (batchfiles, actually) to do the job also.
Do you have AMD Sound driver visible in device manager and in Sound applet? You might need to make it the default device when using HDMI.

As I said before. I uninstalled the catalyst drivers and the sound went away. I never uninstall catalyst without running driver sweeper also. So, I uninstalled the 13.10 beta drivers, and the sound was gone. Even when I went back to windows to re-install 13.9, the sound was not there. It only returned once I installed the catalyst drivers again, and the restarted the pc.

Yes, I have checked that, and it was definitely the amd hdmi driver. However, I also switched it to the windows driver there, and it still was there. Something to do with Catalyst

Might be some other things to try - just in case you did not do it already:

codecs overlap/conflict - maybe uninstall all 3rd party codecs?

disable onboard audio (if exist) in BIOS

TV audio settings (if you output to TV)

disable sound enhancements for the onboard audio or sound card - kinda pointless but maybe worth a try
