Troubleshooting my build help appreciated

Hi there, first of all, I'm new to the community, so hello. I had some general troubleshooting queries and wanted to get some feedback from the experts. I've lurked these forums and faqs, so I know you guys know your hardware.

My build in the signature is the one I'm having issues with. In general, my issues have been occasional crashing (sometimes freezing, other times BSOD). I will try to account the history of my parts and the troubleshooting I have done this far.

Initially, I had upgraded the motherboard and processor (roughly 5 days ago). The rest are old parts from my old build. This went mostly smooth, until It froze on my windows install. I went in the BIOS and noticed really high temps (like 70+), so naturally i shut the computer down as quickly as possible. I re-seated my cooler, and the temps dropped to like high 20s/30s idle. Once I got all set up, I started experiencing the crashing and BSOD after oh about 30-45 minute intervals. I thought, hey maybe the hardware was borked, so I ran IBT at max which failed on the second pass, however the temps were in acceptable ranges. On, a whim, I thought maybe my old memory was giving problems. Sure enough, I ran memtest 86+ and it crashed 2.5 hours in with both parts in. I am currently testing both sticks individually before considering replacing them. other than the sound card which is super old all other parts are about 2 years old.

So, I guess what I'm asking, is the memory likely my issue? Do I need to entertain other contingencies? Do I need to test individual DIMMs?

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Oced,
I would say you are on the right track sounds like a heat or mem issue to me. On a long shot make sure you are using latest bios for your board. Slim chance it could be not enough power. yes test individual sticks in different slots but ideally we need to ensure your new board and chip are ok first as well.

It's just a slow process of elimination mad.gif

Are you in a position to test cpu in old board with a bios update and test. also try new board with old cpu. should highlight a duff part if you have one.

Good luck thumb.gif

Thanks for the help rob. I found an older stick or ram lying around, so I ran the same stress tests with the different stick. The system passed all the tests (IBT, memtest) on both slots that had been in use previously, so I ordered some new sticks. Thanks again, I appreciate the feedback.
