Intel i7 4930k and Motherboard Asus P9X79 Bios update problem

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

i recently bought a new motherboard and the new core i7 ivy brigge e cpu 4930k. Problem is, i need to update the motherboard in order for the cpu to work. The only way i know to get to know the current bios version is to go to the bios itself which is impossible without cpu working.

Before you ask: i already checked stickers and the boxing.

My question: Asus recently changed their bios from rom to cap files. If i just install the newest cap version, the bios would break when it is still a rom version. You need to use the cap converter for versions earlier than 1203 (current is 4302).

I want to run the rom to cap converter to be sure, but does it break the bios if it is already .cap?

Thanks in advance, hope you can help me.

If you have a new mobo from Asus it probably has a .cap bios on it already. Just update your bios, with the bios flashback usb port to the newest bios version, which should support the 4xxx cpus. With bios flashback I don't think you need a cpu. Go here - http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/

Sorry.. I know this is my first post. Just wanted to tell you that I just got my new system operational and am running the i7 4930k with the ASUS X79-Deluxe mainboard. Also running an Intel 240GB SSD, 32GB(4 x 8GB) of G.Skill Ripjaws Z DDR3 21333 with a Cooler Master Eisberg for processor cooling. So far, no issues. Looking to learn how to overclock her though. My Bios version if 0401. If it helps any, below is a link of the CPU-Z validation thing.

Hey. I have the exact same problem. You got it working by just using the cap file for usb flash? Also, do you have to demount the cpu, or can you still flash while the red cpu led light is on. No more thermal gel you see frown.gif

I recently just bought a rampage iv gene and 4930k which should be some process. Mine was already .cap which they all should be from major retailer. Just leave it as a .cap file. Make sure to rename it to the correct name for your mobo.cap and put it on the root of the usb drive formatted to fat32. The led on the back of the board will blink for a decently long time. Just have the switch on the power supply turned on. I was having trouble because i was using an old xp machine to download the bios and rename it. The renaming process is different in xp and it really messed me up. On a windows 7 machine it's so easy.

There should be bar code near the SATA ports. The last four digit is the BIOS version you motherboard currently have. With this info you'll know whether you need converter or not.

You can use USB flashback to flash/update BIOS without CPU/memory/GPU installed. Just need to connect PSU to motherboard.

I have the same problem , follow the step exactly -

1) download the lastest bio from Asus web to your harddisk
2) download also the rom to cap converter
3) download Brenamer from Asus web also
4) Convert the bio rom to cap file using the rom to cap converter( bef convert the rom should be a zip file, rem to extract the file)
5) Copy your Brenamer file to the same folder with bio cap file. Run the Brenamer
6) You will see the bio cap file change the file name (pls use the converter to convert rom to cap if bio file is a rom file before you rename it)
7) format the thumb drive to fat 32
6) Copy the renamed bio cap file to the thumb drive and follow the step of asus thumb flashing. you are done.

You got to rename the cap file to shorter one using Brenamer from asus bef flashing
