how much radiator?

I am curious how people figure out how much radiator cooling they need in their PC's? I seem to remember ages ago I read something about how many watts said radiator could cool, or I could just be making that up in my head...

The more the better.

I have heard of rules of thumb as follows:

Every Item = 1x120

So example = CPU + 2 GPU = 3x120 = 360

Having said that it is all based on the amount of heat produced so that really is dependant on GPU/CPU.

Its based upon how many watts of heat dissipation you require. There are some reviews on the internet of different radiators and how many watts they can handle and keep the water at a certain delta. My advice would be to give us an idea of what you plan to cool and let some of the experienced members chime in on what they recommend.

My question was more out of curiosity at this point, (daydreaming about a new build) I hope to water cool a system in the future and wanted to be informed on how to calculate how much you really "need". Obviously overkill will be best but to save space and money I was hoping to find out an equation of some sort to figure out how much I would need when the time comes. I suppose I will look into some radiator reviews and see what they have to say. Thanks for the info guys!

I like to say a 240 per CPU or GPU, but its not absolutely required. If you were to buy a 4930K, for instance, it has a higher wattage than a haswell CPU. Could you cool a 4770K and 7970 with a single 240? Yes, it would work, but your water temps and CPU/GPU temps would be higher than if you had a 360+240. I would honestly put as much as the case you have can handle.

This.

Just try to see how many you can fit into your case and get that many...overkill is the best solution...if you're going to do it, why not just go all out?

It really depends on your fan choices. A single 120mm radiator could be enough for a CPU + GPU if you don't mind using 3000+ rpm fans. Drop down to 600rpm and you'll need 4-5 x 120mm.
