Underwhelming Ivy and Haswell are driving me to LGA 2011

So, two+ years ago I got myself a nice, new Sandy Bridge 2600K and a rockin' Asus Maximus IV Extreme. Life's been good with this setup, the board works wonderfully, well-made, it was rather innovative at the time and offered me as a PC newbie a chance to delve into overclocking and learn the ins and outs of voltages, clock speeds, RAM timings, etc. The 2600K at the time was heralded as a massive leap in performance even beyond its 990x bigger brother from a generation before. It's now time that I feel an upgrade should be in order for my CPU and mobo, but the thing is, the offerings at this price/performance level seem to have stagnated severely over the last two generations since Sandy came down the tubes.

Originally I was gung-ho to upgrade to Ivy Bridge, since it also runs on the same socket (LGA 1155) as my Sandy setup, but the increase in temps and only marginal performance improvements put a damper on my enthusiasm, and eventually, I decided to wait out for the new Haswell LGA 1150 boards and chips, and upgrade whole hog to a new platform. Haswell is here now, and if the reviews are anything to go by, it's not offering a whole lot to look forward to, other than knife-edge voltage tolerance between acceptable-but-high temps and nuclear meltdown.

On top of this disappointment with the Haswell CPU lineup, the boards don't seem to be spectacular either- Save for their astronomical prices. I am now familiar and comfortable with ASUS's "RoG" brand and BIOS layout, and I had hoped to go from the MIVE to the MVIE so that I could stay in familiar territory. The thing is, the board seems to only perform as well as its rivals, and the high price (Actually much higher than what a Maximus IV Extreme cost two years ago) is "justified" by the inclusion of ridiculous overclocking naff in the box which I will never, ever use. So neither Haswell itself nor the boards which support it really offer anything I could justify spending money on. I like the low temps and massive OC's I can push from my Sandy Bridge 2600K, but the platform is starting to show its age just a little bit. It's replacements are dull and seem to be resting on their laurels, so to speak, so because of this, I'm now considering going Ivy Bridge-E.

The Rampage IV Extreme is a fantastic board, the price is only slightly more than a Maximus IV Extreme, and the new 4820K seems to be doing well (no worse than the 4770K) in reviews so far. As a matter of fact, this one:

Actually recommends it as a solid alternative over the Haswell 4770K!

It's just unfortunate that the high-performance/mainstream market has gotten so unimpressive that people in my position are better off going for a platform that they hardly need, performance-wise, than they are sticking with the segment that is supposedly tailored to them as gamers.

I know this is kind of rambling, but I just really wanted to get excited for the Maximus VI Extreme and Haswell but as it looks, I'm better off either staying with what I've got, or going all out and upgrading to a full enthusiast platform, because it seems that LGA 1150 just only BARELY makes sense as an upgrade for someone in need of an upgrade from an existing platform, and it certainly doesn't make sense for someone already running Ivy Bridge. I'd rather upgrade (2600K > 4820K) for $900 than sidegrade with heat difficulties (2600K > 4770K) for $750, if you know what I'm saying.

Sorry for your experience but personally i feel the 4770K was/is a great processor and still compete with the extreme ivy version on lower cores/thread.
I have the 4930K in our workshop and the benches are not that different, just my own personal preference however - i understand your point.

I could be wrong but you have to account for the fact that Intel doesn't assume for overclocking. From the facts we know that the 2600k is a legendary chip in the overclocking community; however, outside the overclocking community it really isnt special.

You also must remember that more ghz do not always mean better performance.

I mean, my 4.7GHZ 8350 do not really compete close to my 4.3GHZ 4770K
The same goes for all the gpu speed nuts, core clock / memory don't always mean better if higher.

the 3770k is annoying when it comes to temps. that thing belongs in a freaking refrigerator if you OC past 4.5ghz

Yeah. I know that a 4770K in benchmarks provides maybe a 3-5 FPS increase over a 4820K, but the added benefit of heat and useability in non-gaming tasks like encoding and editing ,which I do more and more of, makes it really appealing. I figure if my only option was to upgrade to Z87 for 750 dollars or stay on P67, I'd stay.

I suppose it depends on the area of usage and where, if you are someone who makes money from making those videos rending and so on the extreme series would be a solid choice.
But if you are just an average user at home or hobbyist you will be just fine with a 4770K instead of the extremes, the heat isn't bad at all if you just get adequate cooling.

4820K all the way.

I am loving mine, although we are desperately in need of a Bios from Asus, but so far its sitting at 4.6Ghz stable on a H100i Push Pull and it runs incredibly well.
On top of that its less expensive than the 4770K in SA an anyway. I am really glad I gave haswell a skip and went up to Ivy E.

tbh, there is absolutely no need to upgade from a 2600K. As you said, IB and haswell are hardly faster than SB, (game) developers will have to keep this in mind if they want performant programs. If you really need 2 more cores than you can do it but i personally think 8 logical cores is more than enough for at least 2 more years.

But if you really do a lot of encoding or just feel like spending money than go for it.
