Will i7 3770k be good for gaming longer than the 1st/2nd gen i7s have been?

My friend had an i7 920 and it started showing its age like 1.5 yrs after he got it.

I've had an i7 3770k for about 1.5 years now and literally nothing makes it break a sweat. It OC's well (4.5+ np), and is amazingly fast.

I doubt there's going to be any game that will bring it down during the next-gen era.

What do you guys think? Will this CPU be good for another like 3-4 years?

If it does not bottleneck your other hardware or feels slow to you it will most likely be good for another year or so more then that is only speculations as software and such progresses with different areas in coding and new ways of utilization.

Games are not to cpu heavy anymore so worry more about the gpu.

Yeah. i hope i dont have to upgrade it any time soon. i think i'll get the next gen AMD cpu since battlefield 4 looks promising.

If anything, with multi-threaded games becoming the norm thanks to the next gen consoles, your 3770K and even 1st gen i7s will have much longer legs.

Plus, if Fudzilla is to be believed, Intel is shifting to a 2 year development cycle for desktop parts. So everything will have a longer shelf life by default tongue.gif

How exactly is his 920 showing its age? I am not doubting you; however, a 920 @4hz + will run a 780gtx close to max in most games.

To answer your question: it depends on what you mean by "good for another 3-4 years". Four years from now it is probable that there will be a GPU that will bottleneck on your 3770k as much as my 4ghz 920 would bottleneck a 780gtx(not much).

So in my opinion, yes you're good for 4 years with your 3770k.biggrin.gif

He had trouble running BF3 on ultra even though he had a 580. His CPU usage was really high.

He also can't run planetside 2 as well.. he gets like 30 fps.

Even MMOs like WoW make him lag horribly when he's in the middle of crowded Org.. I was on Illidan and pulling 40+ fps with 100s of ppl around me.

There is hardly any advancement in both IPC and clk speeds so if that trend continues then you still have a high end chip 5 years from now.

What's the memory frequency of your friend? I have read a lot of the PS2 forums and i remember that people with 2600K some of them had good fps and others didnt while all where bottlenecked by the CPU. So that makes me think the bottleneck in planetside 2 might be in memory speed.

Remove the biggest bottleneck...Add a SSD thumb.gif
If you already have one then you are good to go with your current setup for another 3 years or so.
