Getting crossfire to work properly?

I just recently began crossfiring two 7970s. This is my first time crossfiring, and it's insanely frustrating (I know, I should have listened...). At first my bottom card was always running at full clock speeds and 99% usage. Disabling ULPS fixed that it is always in idle state while not playing games, and during games both cards have identical usage.

I have the 13.10 beta drivers and I made sure to use driver fusion to remove any traces of the old drivers. Frame pacing is on. Most of the time I get INSANE stuttering. This is not just low observable frame rate (which I am also experiencing) but actually MASSIVE frame hangs in pretty much every game and 3D benchmark. They are enough to make me want to pull my hair out. My GPUs have some loud coil whine and I can literally hear the coil whine come to a dead stop for a moment during these frame hangs, as if the GPU actually pauses. GPU usage also bounces around from 50-80%. They happen at seemingly random times.

When I disable crossfire and run only the master card, if I have 70-80 fps, I can run a locked v-sync 60fps with no stutter. If I enable crossfire and play the same game at around 100fps, and try to turn on v-sync, I get the most ridiculous stutter fest I've ever seen, as if it's literally impossible for these 2 cards to produce a frame in less than 16ms.

Also, performance scaling has been terribly unimpressive. In BF3, in a scenario where I'd be averaging 60fps with 1 card, I'm only averaging 80fps with 2 cards. Anyone have any ideas on how to get crossfire to work as advertised? Or should I accept these drivers are a joke, sell both these cards, buy a GTX 780 or R9 290X and stick with a single card setup?

i've been following your threads about amd cards and i 've been feeling your pain as well, except that my results in BF3 MP are opposite compared to yours. i advise that you go for a nvidia cards to stop these madness. seriously. i am dead serious.

anyways, here is what i get with my 7950/7970 stock and an i7 at 4.5GHz. GPU usage 98/90. CPU usage around 80% using 1080 Ultra 4MSAA.

all i did was installed the 7970 and to my surprise crossfire was already enabled. disabled ulps and played BF3.

the 780 will serve you well but what driver to use ask one member here . . .

hmm... well if I can get enough money for both cards and their blocks, I might bite at a 780. Have to pay out the arse for one, but if I beak even I might. Otherwise I'll just sell one 7970, keep the one that can hit 1320Mhz, and wait for the first 20nm GPU to release...

like i said - gl. i play BF3, so i'll stick to amd. checkout my avatar. now, what if BF4 behaves the same way.

Running stock clocks currently. Please elaborate on what you mean by bad config?

I had the same problem with a pair of 7950s. Exasperated by eyefinity. Yanked them out and put my 770 back in. Im going to wait until AMD gets their crap together before trying again.
