i've been using amd for a year or so and haven't been following intel . I have a gigabyte z68 mobo w/ 3570k cpu and I see intel is got a new cpus and z87 mobos. if I update my old z68 and cpu what would be improved with the new stuff?

You won't feel a difference. The improvements are not big enough for that. It will only show up in benchmarks. Don't spend money yet. Wait another two years or so.
