You have 12 threads in your 3830k,
100/12 = 8.33
For example, If task manager shows around 8.33%, then we can say a power of about a whole single thread is being fully utilized.
If you are seeing 45% utilization in BF4, this means 45 / 8.33 = 5.40 Threads are being utilized at max.
5.4 threads mean 5 threads are on 100% and 6th one is on 40%. (Just for a simple understanding, I know this is theoretical and load must have been distributed among all threads. )
So lets say BF4 uses 6 threads from your Hexa Core i7.
As we know about hyperthreded i7 that even a "single thread" of a certain core is able to utilize about 90% of all the floating point and integer resource of that core. (Unfortunately FX CPU don't work like that, each core has limited resource in a module), as you must have understood that both threads of a single core can not be seen as 100% in the task manager. It actually means that a particular single core may be at 100% load when load on both of its threads are like 10% / 90% or 50% / 50% or 25% / 75% and so on. But it can not be 100/100.
Am I right ? Please correct me,
if anything is wrong. I just wanna know how many threads can Frostbite 3 actually use when you give it more threads.
According to my calculation, if you are seeing 6 threads being utilized, then there are two ways to distribute this load on a Hexa Core i7 CPU.
1) Each one thread of a single core is at 100%.
2) Each thread is at around 50%.
So my question is, what actually do you see ?
If its case #1 then we can say BF4 is using only 6 threads.
If its case #2 then we can say BF4 might be using more than 6 threads.
It will be very helpful if you could disable hyper thread on your Hexa Core i7 and post a screenshot of Task manager showing CPU utilization while playing BF4.
If BF4 utilizes all 6 cores even a bit (when HT is off ), then we can confirm BF4 may actually use more than four true quad cores.
I know there might be many flaws in my calculation, I just wanted to make you understand what I want to know.
