[solved] Setting up two different wireless routers to form a single LAN

Thread Starter
G'day,

I'm trying to get two different branded wireless routers to connect to each other to form a single LAN but still have internet beamed from the second wireless router. I have a complicated network set up but it works effectively just without the routers recognising each other as being on the same network. The network is set up the way it is because our house is two stories.

Basically the current network set up is as follows:

Motorolla Surfboard Cable Modem -> Western Digital MyNet 600 -> TP-Link EoP 200mbs -> Tenda Wireless N 300.

The Western Digital router is additionally plugged into my pc and the xbox. The Tenda router is plugged into my brother's PC.

I have tried disabling the DHCP server on the second router and assigning an IP to it and switching the ethernet cable in the second router from the internet port and into a routing port however the second router has no internet when this is done. I've also tried assigning a static IP and manually adding the router IP to the Western Digital router but still no dice.

I'm stuck and need some help.

Should be an option in the second router called something like "ap mode". That should do it if I'm understanding it right.

I'm not quite understanding how you want this set up.....I take it the two routers are wired using EoP? IF so, the missing step is probably pointing the second router to the first as a default gateway.

IE 1st router - DHCP is set on as normal

2nd router, static IP on the same subnet, DHCP server turned off, and default gateway set to the 1st routers internal IP

example

internet---1st router wan---LAN 192.168.0.1 ---second router 192.168.0.2 default gateway 192.168.0.1

Heres a suggestion, if your main PC and xbox are wired to the Western digital router 1, why dont you replace that router with 4 port switch like this one http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=1023 which is unmanaged and shouldn't cause any conflict with the router upstairs. Unless you require wireless access you could replace them both and all should run just fine. I have used the same technique before to remove a layer of complexity from a home network.

Yes the two routers connect via the EoP adapter. I will try that option and see how it goes.

Wireless is required upstairs and downstairs.

So if I understand this right, you have 2 separate cables going to each router, and you basically want to make them cover 2 different areas with automatic roaming?

Or do you want a repeater, which is pretty much just set-and-forget?

just set them to Access Point mode and use the same SSID with same wireless settings for security, password, etc. you can use DHCP on each router but it may be troublesome since you will need exclusive ranges (different on each router) to avoid conflicts, that means that roaming will require a change in IP, so some temporary signal loss will occur.
easy remedy is to set a DHCP server on some Windows or Linux box and set each router to only forward DHCP requests to that server, then everything will be seamless.

I have setup a 6 access point wifi zone over 2 floors in our company building, same ssid, DHCP server is a separate box (serving the whole LAN with various VLANs), so AP's just forward requests to it.
