Win8 AC'97 audio issues

Hello everyone,

So, after a long summer holiday at work, my school chucked out some old hardware. Amongst the hardware was a little shuttle XPC SS59G. Fully equipped with a P4 3ghz, 2GB DDR ram and an X1950GT AGP card.

Sweet I thought...

As I get Dream spark through work, I downloaded and installed Win8 Pro X64 bit and all went according to plan, well, kind of.

I cannot for the life of me get the '5.1 channel AC97 audio VIA VT1617a Codec' to work with it! I managed to get an old AGP card working, figured I can get sound working.

Now.... I use advanced settings then set the troubleshooter to boot and disable driver signing, and Windows picks up an unknown device, but cannot get it to install the driver!

I have tried everything I can think of. I hope some one can help me as I was thinking about upgrading it to a newer shuttle motherboard with newer hardware as I want to use it as a media centre PC and love the idea Windows 8 can have all my favorite things on one home screen.

So to save a few pounds, would really appreciate it if some one could offer some help!

Thanks!

David.

I had the same problem on Vista a few years back. Unfortunately it seems Vista and newer OSes only support HD audio.

Does not meet Premium Windows 8 requirements so VIA didn't certifiate it for Windows 8. Their AC'97 drivers should work up to 7 through.
