Completely new system

Thread Starter
Okay, I've just about had it with my current system. I'm making a new one from scratch. What I'd like are some opinions from experts here. I'm on a relatively tight budget and the first thing that I'm buying is a motherboard. What would be best (I live in Canada)...I'd prefer not to spend more than 150 canadian on it.

Well the total budget for the rig will definitely need to be known to choose the right mobo for you. If you give us a ballpark total budget for the rig, we can choose a better mobo for you.

We'd all be glad to help, however, first you need to give us some information:
What is your budget?
What will this rig be used for?
What are you aiming at? (Silence, Speed, etc.)
Also, do you want to go Socket LGA775, Socket 939, or Socket AM2?

See the problem is that the budget will range. I don't have the cash for everything (I'm only 16), but I'm working and earning money...I just thought the first thing i should buy is the mobo...

I'm gonna be using this computer for all around stuff (surfing, games (not really intense ones, just online ones and some dos ones ), word processing), but i still want power available if i need it...but i don't need like 5 GHz, about 2-3 will cut it

i'm aiming for a balance between price and performance, and I don't care too much about noise...I'll be using air cooling btw

so as my money comes in, i'll save up and buy each part-by-part

I already have a case

thanks guys!

I'd get a socket 939. The CPUs are fairly cheap, and you can get them eaven cheaper if you buy them off the people here who are upgrading to am2 or 775

im selling a amd barebones kit, its pending sale but the buyer is not paying yet, ill notify you after a week if its still up. its $250 and includes a A64 3800+, AC ALPINE64, DFI nf4-DAGF (ultra infinity), and 1gb pc3200 cl3 ram.

otherwise, i would get any 939. 939 is tried and true , and it owns. i would get a 3700+ and a DFI mobo, with a Big Typhoon and 1gb ram, and a 7600gt. that should run you less than $500 US dollars (dunno how much canadian) total, which is pretty good, and the mobo will be less than $150 canadian ($70 US on newegg)

Socket 939 was what I was thinking. I started building a few years ago and I got a case, then I forgot about it. Is the LANParty nForce 4 SLI-DR still a good mobo for 939?

Pretty much the best

EDIT: However if I were you I would save up till you have quite a bit of money. If you buy one at the time then you will be spending alot more on your first component than you would if you bought it at the same time as your last component...if you follow. I would just keep saving

why thank you rottenotto

yes it includes a case, not just that! also i can throw in a 10gb hard drive and a cd-rom drive, even an old video card simply for testing purposes, so all you need is a PSU to hook it up.
i made a new thread for it as the buyer has temporarily canceled (he is trying to get the funds) so its BACK UP FOR GRABS! anyone can snatch this great deal! before it goes on eBay, i thought i would like to share some OCing ownage with OC.net members who havent experienced 939 http://www.overclock.net/sale/144090...ml#post1583631
