oh, sorry my bad. didn't look thoroughly enough through the article. so in the end it means while AMD can still have a back-plate and sufficiently cool the card, while nvidia can't.

Even without the backplate, the nvidia card is still running hotter

-690 load

-7990 load

clearly the backplate is doing its job.

interesting Did you take those? I'm not discrediting those images, however, they do not paint the entire picture. I could force my 780's fan to run at 40% then OC and fold on it making it a nuclear reactor in my computer.

Basically, I'm just wondering what the aggressiveness of the fan profiles are.

Lastly, isn't that just measuring the temperature off the backplate? Couldn't it be that the actual GPU's are frying their pants off?

nvidia- from the direct x 11 era, none have a single backplate. with the exception of the half plate on the 590. but that thing still ran hotter than anything else.

Even without the backplate, the nvidia card is still running hotter Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

clearly the backplate is doing its job.

Unless you can post with/without back plate of both then it's meaningless.

Old data here, buts it's the only card I ever tested with/without back plate.

Nvidias argument is that in SLI it doesn't do its job not single card configs

5000 series is 3 gens back and I said a couple not a few (yes I am being that pedantic)

the 6970s and 6950s I had didn't actually have backplates and they were reference cards, so that is a mistake on my part

I had multiple 5870s and neither have them had a backplate. And they were both reference

if you viewed the pictures properly, you can see the GPU's being at 84C and 80C respectively. also the pictures aren't mine. source is here http://www.hardware.fr/articles/891-5/releves-thermographie-infrarouge.html the page is in french but if your using chrome it should be easy to change it to english.
