is a half slot clearance between cards ok for air cooled system?

My motherboard has 2 pcie x1 slots between the gpu slots.

The card I want is 2.5 slots. So that's a half slot clearance.

Is that fine or should I look for a 2 slot card instead? I've never used multi gpu before so I don't know if tht makes a difference.

I can mount a side fan that's over the gpu slots, and I plan to.

One card will still run a little bit cooler than the other almost no matter what you do.

...even by themselves.

I would just test them solo first, and put the cooler one on top, You should be okay.

I ran 2 GTX 580's with reference coolers in sli on my ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard which only gave me 1/8 of an inch between the cards and they worked fine, there was an 8c temp difference between the gpu's, even under heavy load my temps were fine, I now run a GTX 680 and 1 GTX 580 for PhysX and my temps are still good. so with yours giving you a half a slot of clearance your better off then I was with my 580's

Make sure you have an even intake/exhaust ratio.

Really? I thought positive air pressure was almost axiomatic. And personally, I have a bit of a dust problem because I have dogs who go trail walking daily in a dry climate, plus I have doors to the backyard in my bedroom that I leave open and the pups roam in and out. Just, constant dust. Tons of sand too, the pups go to the beach every morning. It's not just dust and sand either, I'm always finding all sorts of surprises in my bed, twigs, rocks, dead gophers, insects, etc. Some real frontier living going on here.

There are 7 fan mounts on my Define R4, 2x front, 1x bottom-middle, 1x side over Gpus, 1x rear, 2x top. All mounts are 140/120.

I was planning on two 140mm noctua a14 pwm intakes in front, one 140mm Fractal Design R2 intake on side, one a14 pwm rear exhaust, and one 140mm Fractal Desogn R2 top exhaust, for a 3 in-2 out ratio.

And I've just been PMing with a guy on these forums who has the same case who says the side intake doesn't do much so I was considering just the 2x front intakes and 1x rear exhaust.

You saying that's no good? Do 2x fron intakes and 1x rear/1x top exhausts? The front intakes are obstructed, and I need the hdd bracket btw. And there will be a d14 cpu cooler messing with airflow.

And I was going to put silverstone magnetized dust filters all over the place. Even considering gelid filtered pci brackets. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gelid-PCI-Bracket-with-Removable-Dust-Filter-pack-of-3/140984995604?_trksid=p2047675.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D333005%26algo%3DRIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D177%26meid%3D8785398342152337732%26pid%3D100009%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D261226256340%26

I have a half slot between my 670s and they do fine. Stay pretty close in temps, 1-3 degrees. Also, check your source on whoever told you that side intake fans dont do much. I can watch my temps climb 5-10 degrees under load when I turn my side fans off.

Let me explain. If you have too much intake, then that disrupts the flow of air. If you have too much exhaust, it doesn't allow enough cold air to come in. It only removes the hot air but then what? Right now my rig only has 4 case fans. One top exhaust counter balancing the one bottom intake. One rear exhaust counterbalancing for the one front intake. Keep in mind that the cpu fan is made to dump its heat into the case, not exhaust it so that doesn't count.

Dust filters only needs to be placed on the intakes though if you are going to do that. It would be pointless to do it with an exhaust.
