Dropped Compaq Presario CQ61 no longer powers on...

Okay here's the skinny, for some reason there was 2 laptops stacked on 1 another. Neither were mine thumb.gif
Friends daughter grabbed the 1 on top and didn't realize that there was another 1 underneath.
So in the end it fell to the ceramic floor...maybe 3 feet worth. mad.gif
It landed flat the way it would sit on a table but now it won't power on.
Doesn't even show the power light when you plug it in. I have tore it apart and see no damage at all, but I did find a screw off the HDD sleeve rolling around inside the case.
It was not on when it was dropped
They obviously tried turning it on to realize it doesn't work.
Anyone got any ideas?

Check the RAM
Make sure all cables are secure
Try to power on without the battery
Try a different HDD if you have one

was it pluged in when it was droped? try wiggling the cable probably broke where the psu plugs into the board thats normally the issue with hp and compaqs they always brake where psu plugs into the board happens to all of them over time which cant really be fixed i mean you can solder and epoxy them but they always break again anyways so if thats the issue then its cheaper and much more easy just to replace the laptop

Wan't plugged in was just sitting there...adapter was wrapped up.
I'm wondering if the board has a hairline crack somewhere

IMO

If it has been dropped, I wouldn't hold much hope in the HDD being much good even if you get it working.

Before continuing, you have to consider if it is worth trying to save this laptop, because if it is only a $200-$300 one I would personally just check the HDD.

Since you have no power it is a matter of following the current, check the charger for power at the plug end to the laptop (I personally use a multimeter) if good, check the plug on the MB it plugs into, it will either be a ribbon plug or a solder fitting, make sure all is well (checking to see if it has worked loose or if it is broken internally)

If they both are well, I would be looking on the MB for a cracked solder etc, the CPU to see if it has worked loose or something. Check the LEDs to see if they are just not working.

But I also would pull the HDD out, insert it into a desktop, and check the SMART on it.

Okay just got off phone with the owner, seems when she plugged it in. The LED's all light up and then went out then she thought she smelt something "funny".
Well problem solved go buy a new one I said...
It's almost $150 off ebay and board ships from China so there's almost 3 weeks. Unless you pay for express shipping then even more $$
Wish they would have told me the whole story and saved me the tear down...
Thanks guys!
