Need some motherboard help

I put together a decent gaming rig in 2007, Q6600 OC'ed to 3.0 on air cooling, 8-gig of RAM, 2x 9600GT in SLI on an EVGA 780i motherboard. Board is dying, throughput is all over the place on speeds (100k/s to 75mb/s) and today, wouldn't complete post.

I have no money to be dealing with this right now and see some refurb 680i motherboards out there... Should I go with one of those? (I don't need the triple SLI of the 780i and I could never get the southbridge to cool well) If you were on a very small budget ($300ish) could you pick up a motherboard, processor and RAM (I need minimum 8-gig, I do a lot of graphics work now, Photoshop, etc)? As far as speed goes, as long as it is as fast as what I am replacing (which I am running stock speeds now) I am OK with that.

Hope you all can help! I used to have a profile here, pretty much put my rig together from threads here, but for the life of me, I cannot remember my old username.

(Ah heck, I posted this in the wrong thread, can a mod please move this for me? What I get for trying to multitask...)

I had a similar issue with a dying blood iron p35. I bought an intel dp45sg for 45 bucks. It's kind of a pain in the ass board, and it really really needs its bios updates, but it's the fastest lga775 mobo ever made. 1333 ddr3 memory, esata, all the toys. You got to overclock from bios though. It actually comes with overclock software but it's bugged and doesn't work. Also It's picky about memory speeds. If you go for the 1333 stuff you want csa 9 or faster.

Holy cats was it an improvement though. My gpu bench went up 40% and i pulled 2 points on the microsoft speed test.

Board looks great, but I have 8-gig of DDR2 RAM, probably won't work...would need to get new RAM and from what I have read, this board is very picky with RAM. What are you using in yours?

Most of the people with ram issues bought 1066 and then overclocked it. As I said any 1300,hz cas 9 or lower should be fine. So either 8-8-8-24 or 9-9-9-24. I bought 8-8-8-24 I believe. Some cheap off brand stuff on newegg. IIRC I got 4 2gb sticks. It's blue low profile stuff.

Part of the reason my machine went so much faster is the switch from pcie1 to pcie 2. I', running a gtx 460 in it which is a pcie 2 card. Your cards iirc are all pcie1 so you won;t get the same bump I did. The motherboard is faster all the way across though, so you should get a 30% boost at least just from the bus speed.

I set my rig in the rig builder but haven;t figured out how to attach it to my sig. There may be more useful info in there. Should be visible in my profile.

Thank you very much sir, I appreciate it (gave you a +1 Rep). I will look into the board and RAM. Will be nice to have my baby running again. As it sits now, I got it to successfully post so I have not turned it off since. I have 200+ images to edit for work and need my computer running. I really only use one card, so I am hoping I can unload the other one to offset the cost in getting a new board (and possibly RAM).

If anyone has any other ideas of stuff I should look at, options are always good.
