Why Phenom. Why must you hate me so. - Page 3

AMD Is just very cautious over this. Thermal shut down doesn't occur until 90c.

However I have an infrared thermometer and socket temp gets higher than what core temp reports. The sensors on AMD just report cooler temps.

SOI is superior to Bulk in nearly every way, AMD chips can take a much more harder beating than Intel chips can. I can testify for that as well. I always run my chips out of spec. This 8350 is at 1.6v 24/7. I've done it with my P4s and i7 920.

I still have an Opteron 165 at 1.6v+ which chugs along perfectly fine to this day.

I have a dark corner in my parent's basement I refer to as the "Intel graveyard", which is full of nothing but dead Intel chips that died, some of which where I didn't even go beyond 24/7 max recommended vcore.

If OP wants to break 4ghz he needs to take some risks and break out of the safety zone of 62c and up the voltages. It's up to him and how big of a deal replacing the chip would be if things went wrong. Kamikaze overclocking past recommended maximums is only for people who have no problem buying a new chip if the one you have goes down.

But I've seen some go down hard. I had a P4 Prescott that bit it really, really hard. Couldn't even make it into windows in the low 2ghz range when it was 3.2ghz stock.

I only paid around $100 for this chip. Not that big a deal, but I really didn't want to risk the board and the chip itself so I've refrained from going too high (I've heard that this board has terrible MOSFET). I've already got past 4GHZ with 1.5V exactly. I'm not sure if I'd really see a performance boost if I went any higher so I haven't attempted to do so.

Yeah, that's how I totalled my P4 Prescott. Like your Phenom I was stuck just barely below 4ghz and wanted to break 4ghz.

That p4 didn't really like what I did to it, lol.

Get some radiators on VRM's + fan on nb heatsink. PhenomII cpu's get unstable when running over 60°C core temps(the exact point when concrete sample gets unstable varies from 60°C to 65°C). First try to OC by multi. Kingston ram is crap when HTT clocking.Second check how fast you can go on 1.4Vcore.Third after sucefully ocing and testing stability of the cores (prime 95 for 3-4hours is just enough) OC the NB to around 2400-2600mhz(play around 1.2-1.25V at CPU/NB).

Get that HT link to 2000 + or - 200mhz, you typically get instability issues outside that range.

I feel your pain in wanting to pass the 4 Ghz mental threshold. Though mine is a X6 (and 95W, so supposedly higher binned), it took hours and hours to find what exactly worked to get stable past 4 Ghz. We also have fairly similar mobos. At 3.9 Ghz my chip hit a wall at 1.425 vcore; to push past 4 Ghz required a full +0.1 vcore. The chip could run just a little north of 4.2 Ghz, but only pumping max voltage @ 1.575, wasn't 100% stable, I believe due to heat issues, as temps would hit near 60 c. It cranked the *best* benchie scores at 4.2, but for everyday use the crazy amount of extra vcore to scale, and almost 20 c higher max load temps outweighed the epeen benefits. I maxed out all the other settings I could at 3.9 Ghz (NB, system bus, RAM, HT, etc) while finding lowest stable voltage for the settings. These combined provided a far faster, balanced, and stable system than an extra 200-300 CPU Mhz ever could. X4's usually have a 200-400 Mhz higher total ceiling than X6's, but need premium cooling to get there. Get comfortable with your bios and read the Phenom OC guides; within a day or two you'll find the optimum settings for your chip.

+1 to try lowering your HT link to ~1800
Also try to up the CPU-NB voltage if your bios let you.
