I only wish the interface were a little better for freeware and perhaps someone to take the next step and offer collaboration/sharing built in. As it is there is this entire community that could get behind things like GIMP and should be able to manage something equal to or better. As far as an OS stands Linux and it's various flavors does a better job than say Windows. But, because of third party support not being there, no funds to push it, and lack of understanding by the general public we won't see Linux seriously compete with Windows anytime soon.
But it would need to go pretty deep all the way down to font's and font rendering. so it would need rework down to that level and I don't know if the font's are trademarked or patented.
I use Helvetica because it's clean, modern and most folks like it but I there is no Helvetica in the windows version of CS 5.5 while I'm sure it's available as a plugin I can't buy it. It's no kidding simple stuff like that that keep people form switching. At my garrison Apple Chancery is the font used for certificates it's not available in Windows. I'm trying to move us to being more platform neutral but it's hard when my Mac works just fine doesn't sit on the network and runs CS3 combined with the fact that I don't share there is simply no good reason to do anything the only thing that matters is what comes out of the ipf 9100 and the pixima 9000. Results are the only thing scored and until I can't use that very expensive plotter and more than functional printer we won't be changing.
It's the PBKAC that makes all the difference. I like my Mac's but in the end all that matters is product and I'll use any tool it takes to create the product. When stuff's on the line pragmatism always wins.
