What a monumental fail.

they could just not release it and let you keep using the hydro copper block which is $170 or so with the backplate, and only passively cools the vrms. Nty ill go with EK, you know...the people actually trying to make a good product with the time limit and size limits they have?

Full cover refers to the fact it covers the gpu core, the vrm and vram chipsets. It doesn't mean it has to cover the entire pcb. That would be some heavy som-of-b.

It is fullcover. No, it doesn't look like its got an extended top like the Titan SE and XXL blocks. That's purely aesthetics and won't affect your temps. Acetel is actually more demanded then the plexi tops. Plus, from what they have mentioned, acetal is much easier to mill then plexi.

Also, keep in mind, this is a small group of customers for this block. Unlike Titan/780, EK can't go all out on a product that won't sell large volumes. Check out the Matrix and DC2 blocks. Be glad ek stepped up to make one

dont forget the went with nickle/acetal top for time constraints, they still have to work on the 780 lightning block, galaxy hof 780 block, and work on the 290x blocks because they want to release them on launch day of the 290x. Be glad EK decided to even do one in the first place, or we would all be stuck with the overpriced hydro coppers.

Also, they're working on several mb blocks (like my much anticipated Sniper5). They are a very busy company and small volume products are not their priority if we're honest here, but I'm glad at least they are making the effort in providing variety for several customers.

Who cares about the looks, we're talking about a classified card here. As long as the performance is great I would have nothing to complain about if I was a classy owner looking for a block.

No matter what people say about EK, the quality of their plating, the looks, the customer service etc., they have proven one thing. They produce blocks that perform brilliantly, and they produce them even for niche items.

(also this might even get me to push my card since the classy owners might get a small boost haha)

See my earlier post on what is actually "fullcover".

These small volume blocks (ie Matrix, DC2, Lightning, etc.) are generally a bit more expensive then their mainstream reference designs. For example, the 7970 block can be had for ~$100 USD where as the eol Lightning 7970 block is ~$120-130USD. Because ek, like many companies, can't spread the manufacturing cost over a large volume with these specialty blocks, the individual cost thus rises.

Btw, most ppl run ATX setup so the top is actually upside down and you won't see it

Most likely extra cost in developing and adding that to the block. If you really want a full top block, go w/ the reference card and a Titan SE/XXL blocks. This is similar to their other niche blocks. I'm sure the HOF and Lightning will be similar in design.

couldnt do full size because the heavy block would potentially harm the pcb.

well easy fix , just get a broom cut a peace of it and slap it between the chassis and block.
this is wermad idea

It seems like because of the Titan/780 and 770 blocks, everyone was expecting something like this:

(Reference 770 w/ extended top)

but they're getting this:

(DC2 770 block)

Some folks don't understand they're still both fullcover blocks. What's different (besides the pcb design) is the top is longer for the reference "SE/XXL" designs. It just extends the top over the entire pcb but adds no cooling capacity.

Another misconception is that a block base (the copper or nickel plated copper portion) should extend the entire pcb. One, as you and I have mentioned, would put a lot of unnessary weight on the pcb. Two, it would make the cost a lot higher. Three, there's not thermal advantage to cool (and possibly short) the entire pcb. The only components that need cooling are the core, the vram, and the vrm(s). Fullcover blocks will cool all these parts, where as universal blocks will only cool the core.

There are very god reason they didn't do a full length block and honestly I prefer the style they went with. Machining acetal, plexi and other plastics can be tricky so I understand the issues they have and face and respect them for still going ahead with it and making one.

Block looks great.

Just a shame my classified is a total lemon and doesn't deserve a block.
