Maybe it's different in the "mega" corporate world, but in the SMB market, the choice in smartphone is often left to the executive secretary or the whatever the owner's spouse *wants. At least, that's been my experience and I have quite a bit of it.
As far as Android being for work and iPhone for play, that's kind of a half-truth. I do a lot of "work" with my phone; everything I do with my S3, I used to do with my iPhone's 2, 3, 3GS and 4. The S3 just allows me to do it on a bigger screen, and in my opinion, faster. The way *I* use my phone, I should have went with a Note 2. Some may find that size of device "silly" but I think it's even sillier to do half your work out of one pocket and then reach into the other for a phone.
(* One company I contracted for might have laid off an engineer because his was the next phone off contract and the iPhone 5 was coming out. It was between him and another guy of similar talent/background, and somebody brought up the fact that his phone was up for renewal. That Friday, the dude whose phone was up for renewal was escorted out at 9AM and his phone was handed to me for wipe, then taken upstairs. The owner had me setting up his wife's new iPhone after lunch.)
