2012 Macbook Air 11" vs 2011 Macbook Pro 13"

Hey guys I am having a hard time deciding between a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro and a 2012 Macbook Air 11".

I already have a Thinkpad W520 that I love, but I want something that is a little more sleek and not as clunky, so its easier to use around campus and what not.

Anyways I was set on the 11" Air, but then I found a great deal on a 2011 Macbook Pro 13", and I know that it is going to be significantly heavier, but I do get a full voltage processor, upgradeable ram and processor, and a bigger screen. However the Air does have the newer HD 4000, and I do plan on doing some very light gaming.

What would you guys think I should get?

All opinions are welcome!

Thanks,

The Pro's are much more upgradeable and powerful in general and aren't that much bigger, still very portable.
If it's from 2011 it should have a dedicated GPU too so it will do you better for games, my early 2011 MBP has the HD3000 as well as a dedicated AMD GPU.

I'd go for the pro thumb.gif

That was what I was originally thinking, but I already have a great spec'd W520, and I am just not sure if I want to carry around a MBP when I can get an air that is less that half as heavy. But I will miss having the upgradeability of the MBP.

Does anyone else have an opinion?

Depends on what you will be doing mostly.
Just web, word and light gaming? Go with Air. The air is slightly upgradable, I believe the SSD is upgradable through expensive 3rd party solutions like OWC.

If you plan on doing more intensive work, media creation, CAD or VMs I suggest going Pro. I carry around my 13" Pro every day in either a Timbuk2 Backpack, Lowpro Camera messenger or a tiny satchel. The weight/size is comfortable to carry around with the charger (w/out Extension Cable) Battery does me 4.5 - 7 hours depending on what I'm doing. I find 13" is the perfect size for a portable laptop.

But the thing I see you already have a Thinkpad with comparable specs to a 2011 13" Pro. You could just use that for intensive mobile unless you want OSX apps/benefits with that power. Your be spending money for something not much lighter and the same power. The air would be something substantially new on the other hand. With 11"s I recommend trying at a Apple Store or something more and more to see if you can manage the screen size, all the machines on demo have Pages/notepad/safari with Wi-fi on. The 13" Air is the better machine for only little more.

Thank you for the advice. I think that I'll see if I can find a good deal on a 2012 13" Macbook Air, it seems like a great in between.
