Imagine how NOT fun it would be if the game randomly threw-in manufacturer defects in tires. Let me guess, next you will be asking them to make your character wait for an ambulance if you crash, go through 18 months of physical therapy, and lock your game save during that time so you can't play it. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

It depends on how you implement it. A large part of motor racing is managing your resources, tires/engines don't just fail randomly they also do so when they are pushed to hard or abused. That's what I'm talking about.

Current race "sims" have very little features that simulate racing. You don't have fuel (and more importantly fuel weight), you don't have mechanical stresses, if you are lucky the game might have the basic aerodynamics right a long with tire wear.

You say the line has to be drawn somewhere and I agree but I think that if a game calls it self a sim then it should aim for realism. Devs can always put in adjustable difficulty/realism. If you want to target the average gamer and make a fun none realistic driving game that's totally fine. Just don't call it a simulator when it so clearly does not try to be one. Meanwhile people who actually want a racing simulator will be disappointed.

The main reason I lost interest in race games is the lack of realism. There is little punishment so there is little reward.

Go play Race07/R3E, LFS, rF2 and many other PC sims. You can do all of those, and beyond.

You should've seen how pissed I was after I organised a short endurance match, 64 laps of Laguna Seca on WTCC cars, and at two laps to go I blew a tire right after the corkscrew because I was stretching my pit times to gain an edge...

Blowing your engine due to misuse isn't hard at all if you're pushing the cooling vents for maximum aerodynamics.

I used to do some racing in real life, so I understand what you're saying.

Gran Turismo actually does simulate tire wear and fuel consumption. Both the tire and fuel gauges at the bottom left of the screen deplete over time. It's most noticeable on long races where you actually have to pit and have the tires swapped out and more fuel added. In addition to tire wear, it also simulates tire heat/air pressure. Again, watch the tire gauges (all 4 of them are independent) turn from blue to red as you brake, corner, maintain speed, etc.

There are also little details in GT such as accumulated mileage on both engines and chassis (between refreshes) cause them to wear out over time and lose performance and rigidity respectively.

EDIT: Also, about the tire wear- another point: If you are racing around a ring-type track for a long time, one side of tires will wear faster than the other side, and the car will actually pull to the left or right. It's these minor details that most people don't even notice.

Yeah I actually really wanted to give RaceRoom Racing Experience a go as SimBin seams to be a pretty good dev in terms of getting the sim aspect right. To bad it utterly refused to launch on my comp no mater what I tired frown.gif Well its been a while so perhaps I should try again, you never know they might have managed to get it patched.

Race07 is immensly fun... except for the horrific collision engine tongue.gif

Pack racing inevitably involves bumping and panel bashing... but the Race07 engine really wasn't good at that tongue.gif
